we tried a load of things and couldnt seem to sort it.

  • Both using the same version of whatsapp
  • I'm on S7 edge, @puppy1004is on an S7
  • can send/receive videos in whasapp ok
  • can send from gallary fine
  • Issue seems to only affect Gifs from internet, videos received over kik, and pictures over kik saved on device+sd in gallery
  • Performed a hard-reboot on the device to no avail
Device has plenty of storage, so not an issue with a temp folder used for staging being full. Cleared app data + cache, no joy.

Suggested Puppy contacts Whatsapp support incase it is  some obscure bug.

Thanks for the help @Zeito, @CMO Marc Smith. I shall now await a reply from whatsapp's support team.

Hmm, this is interesting. Maybe something to do with some formats / encoding not being supported on whatsapp. Tried it the other way around? or tested with someone else?

@puppy1004From what i have been reading it sounds like the file is being locked when accessed, I am presuming the method for browsing and retrieving the files is different and KIK may be trying to protect its folder.

  1. Please can you try copying the file from the Kik data directory to your standard gallery and try to send it.
  2. close KIK and then copy it out (maybe some form of active protection and file tracking)
  3. there is a possibility that the file has been tagged with some form of dlna for android, lets see what happens first !
I have a few more steps to consider, but they get somewhat more involved and complicated ,lets see how we do so far :)

I did ask Puppy to copy the file to his SD card and try from there, but no dice. Which means either he did it wrong or there is some kind of active protection/restriction to distribution on the file(s).

'dlna' for android? Do you mean DRM? Surely dlna would help us out in media sharing!

does sound more and more like a permissions issue.

Move any of the files your having issues with into your normal camera gallery folder and try again please :)

Ahh apologies, I just assumed you had copied it to another part of the SDcard not the cam gallery.

again, your just on trial and error now, you need to check each variable you can think of and rule it out.

  1. file formats, grab a load of different types, see if that limits it in any way.
  2. file location, move them round to different folders. e.g. phone storage / sd card / new folder / existing folder etc etc etc
  3. file source, get a copy from your phone and the exact same picture placed on your phone from your computer.
  4. always update the thread with the exact action and result so we can analyze the behavior.
Good Luck !!
