Hmm... Tough Question
Hello everyone I was thinking about making a website and want to ask all of you which company/hosters I should rent it off. I don't know who hosts this website but it would be nice to know as at the moment my options are all open; if any of you have any recommendations I would love to hear them.

What kind of website? do you want a vps .. do you want it managed or do you want to manage it yourself? do you want like a full site or just forums?

i want to manage it myself and use forums, stores and login system

VPS - DigitalOcean

Dedicated - Zare.co.uk / SoftLayer

Shared Web - HostGator / Krystal.co.uk

If you have any other questions about hosting feel free to PM me, I'd be happy to help :)

Shared Hosting should be fine for this stuff, but if you do have a lot of users you may want to opt for some more fire power like a dedicated machine.

looking a lot into the DigitalOcean as the prices look great for what you get. 1 question though, can I create forums & shops

If you're looking at using a VPS, you would need experience with some form of Linux command line (be it CentOS, Ubuntu etc), if you don't have experience in this you'll either have to learn it, or go for shared hosting. But if you have the skills to install your web-server and whatever other dependencies your forum software may need then yes, it will host anything you need.

Also, if you're responding, please tag or quote me so I can get a notification :)

I resell webspace, £60 per year. unlimited bandwidth and data.

Can do a vps or dedicated, but will need your specs first.

pm me for more details if your like :)

I'd recommend starting on a month to month billing scheme, just in-case you decide to change the type of hosting, or you aren't continuing with said website. Only put a large payment for annual hosting if you KNOW 100% that's what you want.

@Bandit or DoomBerry Also remember, when looking for hosting, it's not all about the price. You want quality hosting, not some rubbish £1/month hosting. People aren't happy when you have downtime, so go with a decent host to minimize that.

I think the guys pretty much answered all your questions. One thing thought I might want to point out, this site is using Invision which can be viewed here https://www.invisionpower.com/ (the link is in the footer of every page) which isn't free. However there are some free some are open source too,

We use Zare dedicated servers for basically all of our servers, yet they are custom built by Zare with parts we ask for. For what you are asking for I would advise you to use one of their "Cloud Servers", as a dedicated server may be too much for you at this time (assuming that you are not going to setup a massive site and have it being used by thousands instantly).

The main reason why we use a dedicated server for our Website is the amount of traffic it gets, and because a forum this size is quite heavy on DB calls, cache calls, search queries and many other CPU intensive tasks that a VPS wouldn't suit us well.

You don't need Invision Power Board though, you could use one of the alternative software solutions for boards out there, the only reason we use IPB is due to the speed updates come out with security patches, and the amount of changes we can make to it easily to fit our community.

XenForo is pretty good, it's starting price is $140 - There are some free forum software around, they work, but they aren't the best. So if you're looking at making a forums, I'd say save up some money to buy one of the good forum platform licenses @Bandit or DoomBerry :)
