Sorry, we couldn't connect to Skype. [Help pls]

So this is the error I get every time I start skype. I've had this issue for ages but never decided to try and fix it. I've tried nearly everything.. Anyone else had this issue before?

Have you tried to see if it's the firewall that's blocking it? Is it up to date? Have you tried reinstalling it, if you use win8+ have you tried to use the in built one?

likely a firewall problem. Do you have any firewall software on your pc besides the normal windows firewall? 

ZoneAlarm, etc. (ah the good old days)

It's up to date, I've tried reinstalling it. I don't think a firewall is blocking it, how do I check?

in the bottom right of your task bar there is your network conenction icon, either a little computer, or a wifi symbol. right click this and click Network and Sharing Center.

In the window that opens on the bottom right, there's Windows Firewall click that and put up a screenshot here of how that looks - it should be set to Private/Home network.

Also on the top left of that window there is 'turn off firewall' try that TEMPORARILY and see if skype connects. If so, then turn the FW back on - we now know Windows firewall is blocking it. If it doesnt connect, it must be something else.

you may have other software installed then which has a firewall component, it may be part of your anti-virus.

Or, you could have a nasty virus which has disabled the windows firewall for nefarious activities, and is proxying your traffic somewhere - stopping you from logging in to skype. Do you get any weird ads or anything when browsing? What AV do you have?
