OC + Cooler

So i run a pretty budgeted PC set up and looking to do a bit of a OC on my FX-4130. Using OC Genie it goes from 3.8GHz to 3.9GHz. Without the OC it likes to jump from 1.4 to 3.8. Using the OC Genie it sits perfectly at a static 3.9GHz but the stock cooler runs at 100%. Temps dont go over 57c but the noise is horrible. So anyone recommend a good budget air cooler for the CPU? was looking at a Hyper 212 or a Noctua but not sure which. they ranged from 15-35quid the 1s i was looking at. It is a AM3+ socket. Mostly looking for 1 that keeps things cool but isnt going to be so loud which is why i was looking at Noctua coolers

Other PC specs.

Mobo: MSI 970 Gaming

CPU: AMD FX-4130

GPU: GTX 560 (moving to a 750ti in next 2-3 months though)

RAM: 8gb Corsair vengence

I had the same problem a few months back. My processor was hitting boiling point and I'm also on budget. 





Aside from the fan not completely fitting in my PC case, (I have cut a hole in the mesh for the fan to stick out of...), the hyper 212 Evo has worked wonders for me.

Try changing your thermal paste first though, it is a lot easier than installing a new fan...

Changed the thermal not to long ago when i did a complete clean up. That cooler is 1 of the 1s on the shortlist to go for. Im fine temp wise mostly. its the noise that pisses me off. Hows the sound of that cooler when full load also?

Personally I would recommend this AIO as a quick cheap fix for overclocking, it has a nice deep rad to give you decent cooling and is simple to fit.

Keep the brackets and you can fit any cpu you like on there so will last you a while through upgrades. You could go for a cheaper one, but it probably wont be any more effective than what your currently running with air.

when running it, set it up in a pull configuration (rad inside case fan outside case) and tape up any cracks which air could leak through between the rad and fans.

Just looked into both of those a bit more. Seems my case is too small... yay corsair.. im using the spec-01 which seems to limit me quite a pic. seems i cant use most the decent stuff due to case size

Go for the H80i - it's a 240mm AIO in a 120 x 120 package. So it'll fit in place of your standard case exhaust at the rear.

Looked into them before. the 1s compatible are H55, H60, H75, H80. So il look at them. Have been told they can be quite loud though

I've the H80iGT and it's louder than my standard air cooler, because it's also running a pump. Headset on for gaming though and you dont notice it.

Yea i cant seem to find the Noise Level for the stock cooler to compare.

Also.. Adjusted my CPU Ratio to 20. Running at 4.0GHz. Fan is stable. Never touched voltages either. Guna stress test it and see what happens So far so good for the last 10mins doing normal browsing though.

browsing isnt stressing.

Google for UBCD Ultimate boot cd. Follow the instructions to make it a bootable usb pendrive. Boot off that and run something like Prime95 for a while, or any of the other benchmark/stress tools in there.

I meant im stressing now. Using Prime95. Heres the results so far.

You're hitting nearly 70C on the cpu! Not too bad considering P95 will really make her sweat.

as for your original question of which air cooler - the 212 evo is cheaper than most Noctuas, and is an excellent contender. Get some good Arctic Silver (if they even still make that) and you'll be good until you decide to change CPU in the future.

Noctua coolers are extremely quiet. I've build a few PCs, all the same components with only the coolers differing. I have an H80i on mine, a Noctua DH15 on my old housemates, and a BeQuiet Dark Rock Pro 3 on my current housemates. All the same mobos and CPU (I've a 980ti, old HM has 980 and new HM has a 970).

The Noctua is basically completely silent. There's some fan whir, but it's negligible. The only real downside to this cooler is it is MASSIVE. I mean HUGE. You need a big case.

The BeQuiet Dark Rock series are also as their namesake suggests, quiet. If it wasnt for the LEDs on my new housemates computer, you could be forgiven for thinking it was turned off. Deadly quiet cooler, came with their own SilentWings fans which are rubberised for extra acoustic suppression. The downside with this is again, it's quite a big cooler, and very heavy. 

For both of these coolers you will need at a minimum 120-130mm CPU clearance inside your case, so check with your case manufacturers guidance.

Ok so just looked up. Maximum CPU Cooler Height 150mm. So that gives me something to go on. Il look into the Noctuas and Dark rock series and see what i can find.

If you need any help/tips whatever, give me a shout. Unless you're a real sadist, you WILL need 1 other person to install the Dark Rock pro with you. So if you have no friends or you're being shunned by the village, it will be a bit of a ballache. It's a bolt-from-the-rear job.

haha yea. Looking at prices and heights etc. ive found this which could be good. Needs a backplate which ive never done before. But i have also given up on making a budget pc look good color wise. Id prefer performance on the budget not looks now haha.

Back plates basically go on the back of your motherboard, and have screw holes or standoffs on the other side with poke through that the cooler fixes to. It's worth checking as well that your case has a cut-out on the motherboard tray, otherwise you will need to remove the mobo to fit a back plate cooler.

I have the Corsair Spec 01. No reason just the only 1 i found that would fit no issue haha coolers are the 1 thing i hate looking into for the case size issue
