I'll give it a go.

If it doesn't work, is it best to buy anther USB one, or a PCI one? As I know that there is an upgraded version of the adapter I have that sup[ports windows 10, but it is more expensive than a PCI one

get a cable. (if you have issues with having to drill holes etc, I have a cable crimper, so you can keep the holes super small and reattach the ends properly)

If you cant, get ethernet over power.

If you cant get that, get wireless. USB is fine, you dont need pcie speeds for low speed traffic.

if you cant get that, try smoke signals.

What Lionel said - It's hard to beat hardwire to the router. Powerline networking is pretty good, especially if wireless signal in your home is terrible.

I'd say get a PCI-E wireless card, simply because they're not any more expensive, its frees up a usb slot, and you can usually fit better antenna on to them. Plus what else are you going to use those x4 pci-e slots for!

The windows 8 drivers are holding up ok for now. Only had it cut out once so far.

The router is downstairs, and there are some pretty thick walls. I think some electricians did connect me once, as I remember using ethernet, but after renovations it got changed and removed (I think). I do have a cat 6 plug on my wall, but I don't think it is connected to anything.

I'll buy something over the weekend.

Unrelated, I installed steam to my HDD, and steam being steam is only allowing me to install games to the HDD (Which I was planning on doing anyway). Is there much point in trying to make it DL onto the SSD?

Go for homeplugs then, they're usually around 30-40 quid for a kit. I have them and they work reasonably well, they occasionally drop out but it's not a huge deal generally.

As for the Steam HDD/SSD question, not really unless you're going to use it for game storage which at 256 drive, minus windows etc probably leaves you 200ish gig left, i'd just go for the HDD.

Goto Steam - Settings, Select the downloads tab on the left, Click the button "STEAM LIBRARY FOLDERS" Add another folder on your other drive, Install games to that. :)
