New player needing help

Hi guys I am new to Arma - just downloaded it today in fact.  The problem is I can't get anything to run on it.  I've been trying to join one of your servers for half an hour now with no success.  Can someone help me please?

What sort of error or problem are you getting when you try to join? Can you post a screenshot or something?

I've actually managed to sort that issue out only to find I have a new one.  I tried to log onto to the server and received a message to say I'm not "whitelisted for that slot"  whatever that means so I can't enter the actual game.  I have no idea what I'm supposed to do now and am getting really frustrated.  That's two hours gone now with not a single second of gameplay.

If you have any idea what I'm doing wrong then please clue me in pal.

All u have to do is choose a civ slot instead of medic/police m8.

Yep as @Nteslahas said, when you get to the Lobby screen hit the Purple square on the left that says CIV, then choose a free civillian slot and that's you!

Once you've played for a bit and get a feel for it - if you want to play as police or Medic, you can apply for whitelisting to join them here:

This is a tough game to get to grips with for me for some reason.  I love RPG but am a bit of a dunce when it comes to technical stuff (which basically includes anything powered by electricity lol ;-) )

I'll get the hang of it eventually ( I hope lol )

2 Key thing for you to do are: 1) make sure you read all the rules here. You get 1 warning when you login on the splash screen - and they wont take ignorance as an excuse

2) Download Teamspeak 3 and join the TS server. That way if you DO make a mistake and break rp, or kill someone or something, then you can talk it out with them. Dont try to lie your way out of things, people can be pretty forgiving if you're new and just getting to grips with things. Also on TS, if you need help, or say you're being accused of some rule break of something, join the 'Requesting Staff Help' channel. That will message all the on-duty Member Support people one (or two) of whom will bring you into a channel and help you out as much they can with any questions etc you might have, they can act as an un-biased 3rd party in any disputes etc.

They are very, very helpful guys. You can also message them on the forums - their names show up as Dark Orange, and under their picture it says 'SUPPORT TEAM'. They're good lads. I wish i'd never left member support now.
