I'm a huge scrub when it comes to PC's and although my PC has been with me for 7 years with no upgrades I think its time for a full upgrade now that it keeps crashing.

I don't have the biggest budget in the world but I'm open to all suggestion.

Current build:

Case: Coolermaster HAF 932
Processor: AMD FX 8320 Eight Core Processor 3.5GHz
Ram: Gskill 6Gb DDRIII 1600MHz
Power Supply: OCZ 750w 80plus
Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series
Optical Drive: Samsung S222AB DVD-RW
Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit

The only parts I'm hoping to NOT change are the Optical Drive and all my hard drive memory. If I upgrade all the other parts will I lose my hard drive memory?

If anyone could recommend computer parts for me at a reasonable price (I'm poor af)  i'm hoping I can just stick them into my current case and be done with it. (if thats how it works) If not just send me a pre built computer at a cheap price better than mine at the moment and I'll buy it!

What's your budget?

May I ask why you haven't opted for a i7 4970k? It seems popular and people are 'raving' about how well it runs on arma!

@lionel @Zeito Can judge!

I haven't opted for anything right now, what I have listed is my current 7 year old computer.

I'm looking for new upgrades and or a new pre built PC altogether, budget I'm not sure, £400 - £600 ish

I'm not a fan of AMD, I haven't used their products in a while, but i just dont like their CPUs, i feel like they just don't deliver. I'd always recommend Intel.

6GB is a weird amound of memory to get unless you're running Triple Channel in 3x2GB sticks, and you need a compatible mobo and cpu to do that. It's not very common.

Gpu wise, i'm not quite up to date on AMD's offerings, but is the 7900 not a bit dated by now? as @Samatlewiss said it would really help to know your budget, i'm not bad at getting things good for a specified price range, just ask @INS Kral or @Walt or take a look at any of the other build threads i've posted in! Even my PC wasn't that overboard in expense!

@ZeitoFor Arma, Always Intel. I will fully agree there, but gaming in general you would be really surprised how well AMD actually do compared to top of the line intels. I even buy second hand (or hand me downs) and have a surprisingly good system for very little cash.

But were on a Arma forum :) so intel is the way here, I aint gonna argue that ;)

I've always been a big fan of intel, you do pay a premium and i know there can be good performing AMD systems for lower price - like i said i've not had their products for a while!

But yes for Arma - Intel all the way!

£600 and i'm looking for more than just ARMA, atm with my current build I get average 25-30 FPS depending on where I am and how many people are on the server, thats on low graphic settings which is playable by arma standards but if I can get a good arma build and other game build that would be solid for £600

Also to ask another question, if I was to remove everything except the optical drive, could I install new PC parts and still keep my hard drive intact with everything on it? I'm not entirely sure how it works

So what components do you need, are you reusing any of your current build? If you're keeping your case, hard drives, and PSU that can certainly cut the cost down. If you just want to hold on to the hard drives, it'll drive cost up since you'll need to factor those in.

  • i5.4560k 3.5Ghz w/ overlocking
  • Coolermaster 212 Evo - gets great reviews
  • Gigabyte mobo helps keeps costs down.
  • 16GB Corsair Vengeance Pro memory
  • MSI GTX 970 4GB
This assumes you're keeping your current Case, HDDs, PSU. £605 and all good components, should see 50-60fps in arma and plenty of other games!

I'm keeping my current case and I'd like to keep my hard drive with everything on it while upgrading everything else.

If I install the parts you have linked me will I keep my current hard drive memory? (I'm moronic when it comes to tech)

I really appreciate all this help. <3 <3

Yeah it'll all still be there but windows will possibly act a bit funky since the mobo and CPU will have changed drastically, different drivers for hardware, as well as drivers for hardware that's no longer there, windows may deactivate itself as well and think it's been pirated.

You would be better off backing up all your important docs, picutres etc do an external drive or something, and then installing windows fresh.

I have no pictures of worth on here anyway only amazing quality meme's.
If It helps I could add pictures of my current computer inside:

THIS WAS BEFORE I CLEANED IT PLEASE DON'T HURT ME
Honestly I'm shocked I'm still able to run current games at 60fps

PICTURES LIKE THIS MAKE ME SICK!

Though they don't help too much, you will want to make sure you have all the PCI-Express cables for your power supply as you'll need them for the graphics card. I would advise using splitter/adapters like you have at the moment as they can deliver unstable volt age or be a fire risk in that filthy case!

If you needed a new PSU you can get an entry level semi-modular one for about £30-50 quid.

I AM SORRY ABOUT MY CASE!
I WILL LOOK INTO ALL OF THIS NOW THANK YOU <3

I recommend you buy a super cheapy case for about 30 or 40 quid to stick this pc in with the current psu, then buy the components above and a new PSU. That way you can sell the Old pc as a "just-add-hard-drive" option to someone, amybe a mate who wants to get into some gaming with you or whatever. It'll also help you recoup the cost you put into the new one, even if you only get a few hundred pounds for it.

Like i got my new mobo, cpu, memory, cooler, and GPU for about £1100.

Sold my old i7-2700k, BeQuiet Cooler, 8GB DDR3 Memory, and Gigabyte Mobo, and GTX770 to a guy i work with for about £350 (i think he got a pretty good deal!) and he just stuck it in a case and got a gaming pc on the cheap. But that money i got basically paid for my new CPU, Mobo, and Ram, and i just paid off the GPU.

Can I not use my current case. power supply, and hard drive remove the other stuff and add in the list of items you gave me? Will that work or will the items listed not work inside this current case?

you can - just make sure you have all the right cables for your PSU. Dont use a molex to pci-e splitter if you dont have to.
