How to lockpick?

How do i use my lockpicks properly? I want to steal some cars but even though i have bought some lockpicks and have a Rebel licence i dont know how to steal. Can somebody help me with this?

stand/crouch next to a vehicle, press Y, click on your lockpicks and press 'use' below it
