Has Direct comms transmission distance been boosted?

Is it just me, or has the distance of direct comms transmissions been boosted significantly over the past couple of days?

It seems I can hear people talking on direct comm channel, from the other side of the city as if they are right next to me, whereas it used to only work within a small distance. Makes it very confusing and irritating. Other channels seem to be the same as ever.

Can someone confirm if they have noticed this too, or is it something going wrong on my end or in my ears/head?

I just was in game thinkin the same, but i think its good range as it is now.

Heard some people talking, walked 2meters didnt hear anything, walked back 2 meters heard them clearly. Say it was about 15-30m distance i think (they where in a building i didnt see them directly).

I think if it has been changed and it ain't just the pair of us losing our marbles, then it should be cut back a bit.

It makes it too hard to roleplay as you can hear 20 conversations going at once. Don't want to have to drive people into a field in the middle of nowhere just to ask them their name, if they want to pet the puppy, if I should go faster, if it hurts, etc.

I get you, but rather to much than to little right?  Could be lowerd a little i guess, but is it really a "mission" problem and not really a "game" problem?

first time i experienced this, was sitting 20 metres above the ground in my mohawk, and could clearly hear what people on the ground talked about

If it is something that has been changed (TBJ can you confirm?) then I understand why. Stops people crying RDM when they dont hear voice over engines or whatever but please tone the range back a couple of metres.

It's impossible to have a conversation in a town about Pyrgos Rovers FC's chances of promotion as you can hear everyone. I feel like Peter Parker, getting used to his spidersense at an AC/DC gig.

Hmm.. Possibly. Acting on information gleaned from our hosting-company guru, we upped the 'VON QUALITY' figure to 15, from its original 8. Ostensibly, all this was supposed to change was the 'clarity' of the VON signal data, but evidently, it seems to have extended the audible range.

However, in the meantime, we've had an update to v1.18 of Arma3, and that has caused massive amounts of VON packet-loss (signal-interruption) in cop GROUP channel (and probably elsewhere too). Typical of BIS... as soon as we change something and begin to test its effects, they come along and fuck something else up which invalidates everything!

As of last night (about midnight) I put the VON Quality figure BACK to 8 (as it was originally) in order to see whether it improves the lost signal problem, or makes no difference at all. The theory is, if the quality being demanded by VON is lower, then it should fail less because fewer packets are being created in order to service it.

Of course, we're not done yet, so we'll see what happens. As you'd expect, there's little or no real documentation on this feature - in terms of whether it's a codec-quality variation alone, or whether the 'field of hearing' increases too, or what. In fact, the documentation in the config file says the variable only goes between 0 and 10... which is an out and out lie (we've been told by a BIS dev that it goes up to 30!)

As usual, we'll continue to tinker until we find a sweet-spot. Thanks for noticing, Jimmy. Do give us your feedback if you can (given that you're clearly a sentient being, and we relish feedback from sentients).
