But really does anyone have any ideas how to speed up downloads?
It really depends on a few factors:
Supposedly how fast is your internet connection? Is it DSL or Cable? DSL is notoriously dependent on everyone else in your street and local cabinet, plus distance from said cabinet. You might have 'up to' 80mbit BT Infinity - but due to factors outside of your control, you only get 50mbit or less.
Are you connected by Cable or WiFi? If wifi -> Which wifi standard 802.11ac/n/g? Ethernet cable is always best - most ethernet now operates at 1gbit, allowing as much of your internet connection bandwidth to be used in your network.
If you're using Wifi, it's really a roll of the dice - if you're on 2.4Ghz band - this is very crowded and used for everything from wifi, bluetooth, microwave ovens emit 2.4 radiation, DECT phones, all your neighbours wifi devices etc. If you're on 5Ghz wifi band then it's less crowded, less interference, but becomming more common.
Another factor if you're on 2.4Ghz wifi is if it's the 802.11g standard (pretty old now) you're limited to an absolute theoretical maximum of 54mbit. that doesnt include overhead and loss, so can drop to really say 30mbit.
For example: I have 220mbit cable internet at home. My Server connected by ethernet cable gets the full 220mbit on a speed test and can download at a solid 20MB/sec, it's plugged straight into the router. My gaming PC upstairs uses 802.11ac Wifi. It connects to the router at speeds varying on 300-400mbit, depending on how i move/sit/if washing is hanging in the spare room/anything else that effects wifi quality. I'll get roughly a solid 10MB/sec over wifi due to loss/overhead.
