Big FPS drops

Hi everyone,

I'm a recent starter on your server having played on a number of other servers before. So far I've really enjoyed it, always well populated and not too many trolls making life difficult for new starters.

My main issue is I'm having big frame rate/lag issues and I'm wondering if anyone else has had similar problems. I've got a pretty solid PC, normally can run any ARMA 3 mod on 40-50 fps on ultra settings. When I started having issues on this server I dropped my graphics to a mixture of high and very high rather than ultra which makes it run steady at 60fps when the problems aren't happening.

What is actually happening is the game runs fine when I first log in however after about 5 minutes more and more lag/fps spikes occur eventually pretty much becoming constant making the game unplayable (I'm talking sub 10 fps). It doesn't seem to be related to my graphic settings as it happens exactly the same on ultra settings as it does low settings. It only seems to be this server too rather than other servers I've played on which makes me again think it's not a graphics issue. No-one else I talked to in side-chat is experiencing the performance drops at the same time as me so it's not server side so this leaves me pretty puzzled.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as when the game is working well for me I'm really enjoying this server and would like to stick around.

Thanks

No problem, specs are:

Gigabyte H97M-D3H motherboard

Intel i7 4790 processor

SSD + HDD

Sapphire R9 290 Vapor-X OC GPU (4GB)

8GB RAM - HyperX DDR3

And will look up unpacking the CPU now.

if you have any filters turned on in the ARMA menu, I suggest lowering them or turning them off.

Turn bloom off/down

set view distance higher than what you have now (around 3k) and set the object drawing distance a bit over half.

Given this all a go and alas still no progress. Frame rate drops are just as they were before.

Any other suggestions would be great.

Try this out

press "shift"& "-" then type "flush"

you wont actually see anything being typed, but this will reload all your textures on your G-card, although having 4GB available I wouldn't think your running out but may fix it for the moment. It does sound like your running out of ram somewhere though. 8GB of Ram is normally enough, but depends on what you have running tbh all environments vary.

Also worth trying is disabling your page file (this can be a major bottleneck, especially if your ssd is set to SATA mode for example), although with only 8GB RAM you could potentially run into "out of memory issues", but if you close browsers etc etc first you should be fine.

Let us know if that helps.

@Samatlewisscheers for the heads up

Thanks for all the advice guys, tried both the suggestions but doesn't seem to be a RAM issue, did the flush which worked but didn't noticeably change anything. I also set the priority of ARMA to high to see if that helped. I booted up with my task manager open on my second screen and even with Arma set to high priority the RAM usage was only averaging around 46% (42% on normal priority).

None of the other performance indicators seem to be peaking except for my D drive (HDD) and that's only on game start up, not when the FPS spikes are happening.

Also I doubt it changes anything but it's not only happening on this server, its on single player also, testing it on the VR mode and getting the same issues as online.

Is Arma on the SSD?

No, at the moment the only game I have on the SSD is DayZ as its only a 120GB, the rest are on the 2TB HDD, again this is something that is the same as when I was playing a few months ago and it was all working well.

I think you might need to uninstall the pathetic letdown of a standalone and replace it with the amazing Arma3.

Haha yeh I'm considering it, going to need to make a bit of space but worth a try.

Got work in the morning so got to hit the bed now though.

Thanks again for all the help btw guys, appreciate it.

To be continued......

This might be a long shot as I'm not computer expert, but plays.tv can be a pain on FPS, at the moment I get 60fps but sometimes when recording in 1080p 5mb/s 30fps it drops to 40 and goes back up no problem for me but try and change some of the settings on there if you're running it mate, or stop using it altogether and see if that is the problem.

Tabbing out and back in usually works for me, especially in Athira. When I spawn in Athira and start strolling in within the city limits, I tab out and back in and the drops are gone!

did you try disabling the page file (good practice if you have a ssd anyway (along with hibernate) adds to the life expectancy :) )?

In regards to the HDD it is the seek time for loading files, not just the read time, so if you have a large seek time, the game is going to be waiting for that file.

Quite heavy reading, but may be of some help to you.

Also, going to request this get moved to the tech section.

Consider that fact that there is 125 players / many other objects (such as vehicles) being loaded in. The other servers you played on, were they as populated?
