When searching for a ballistic signature through the case file system, the alpha and non-numeric characters entered in the search are stripped out.

When searching for a ballistic signature through the case file system

As it says in the description of the input, it's for searching for a case file using the case number not a ballistic signature which'd be why it only allows numeric characters.
