I'd like to upgrade to from AMD to intel but i am stuck between a rock and a hard place trying to decide on weather to get a 4th gen i5(4690K) or the (nearly) new 6600k. Anyone have either of these and can give me any advice on which one i should go for. Also cooling is a priority so i don't want to be playing arma with my PC sounding like it is going to take flight.

My other(Relavent)PC specs are:

6GB DDR3-1600 (getting another 4GB of DDR3 to replace the 2GB stick)

GTX 960 2GB (being replaced with the 4gb one soon)

Corsair 230T (2 intake fans, 1 exhaust fan on the rear, Another exhaust fan on top)

Depends on your budget really.

I think if you don't want to upgrade your RAM / Case, then go for the i5 4690k.
Ideally you'd want to slap DDR4 into a system with 6600k.

As for the cooling, I don't think your case has the mounts for any kind of radiator / liquid cooling (didn't really look into the specs that heavily mind), so you'd probably have to look into some whisper quiet fan coolers.

@TFE Pimpmauser I just got the 4790k and i'm very pleased with it, you can get a cpu, mobo and 2x4gb ram bundle for about £400.

I agree with @Mycaelis that if you get a 6600k you want DDR4 - DDR3 runs at a different voltage and while the CPU is 'compatible' with it, the higher voltage can damage the CPUs integrated memory controller and kill your new 6600k!

The overclocking potential isnt huge between the 4790k and the 6600k unless you're looking to go for an extreme custom cooled loop/phase change cooling with super high clock speeds.

As mentioned your case isnt great for rad space but a corsair h80iGT is 120x120 with push/pull fan set up and will more than likely fit if you want to go the AIO cooling solution. I have one and it's very good, it can get a bit noisy on full whack but headphones for audio takes care of that.

Otherwise for cooling i'd highly recommend Darkrock Pros or Noctua DH15 for a big air cooler - just check your case can take a 170mm tall cooler first.

If you're upgrading your 960 - think about getting a 970.

Of course it all depends on your budget but if money is tight i say go for the 4790k/4690k, get a cooler of your choice (if you go for the h80iGT then swap your top exhaust to intake to supply the rad fans with cooler external air. Keep all your existing ram saving money there, welcome to the Intel/Nvidia family.

I would get the 4690k.
I upgraded my AMD few weeks back. I was thinking about the i7 6700k, but you also need to get new DDR4 ram.
You won't notice that much of a difference between those 2 in arma.

And why get the same GPU with more GB?
If you want to upgrade your GPU get a better one. (my opinion)

Thanks for the help @Mycaelis  @MrYellowBoss @Zeito. Made my mind up on the 4690k after I realised how much DDR4 costs (for me it was a mid to high end motherboard) so i'll put that DDR4 money into a decent gaming motherboard  (ASUS or MSI) as for the 960 i'll replace that when I have more cash. Also might get a h80i gt at a later date. I'm pretty sure the hyper 212 evo will be sufficient
