VPN Connections

Hello,

Something similar which I am about to talk about has already been brought up once, but after the last response of the author, no other responses were issued.

Link to Thread in Question:

Now,

School is starting for me, and I my school is a 24/7 Boarding school, and I live there the whole year. I do not come from England so I have to stay in the School the whole time, as I do not have a house to go to during the weekends. If there is no way for me to connect with a VPN then I will not be able to play on this amazing server for a very, very long time. Pretty much until Christmas, when I go back home. My Question is, is there any way for me to connect to these servers like I could give you my IP and everything. I just really want to play on this Server and I will not be able to because my school's wifi has every kind of game blocked. I know that this is good so I can study more, but there are periods like the weekends where I have over 6 hours of completely free time where I would love to play on RPUK. I just really want to find a resolution to this issue as I would do anything to play on this as I really enjoy it.

Hope we can find a way to fix this,

Riccardo (Ryker)

Unfortunately not. We can't whitelist specific addresses to bypass the VPN Filter, it's either on for everything or off for everything

Does that mean that I will not be able to play RPUK for multiple months?

Unless you are able to create your own VPN using like your Home PC? Or any other server or computer available you can convert onto a personal VPN that shouldn’t be blocked.

If not there are other options such as using an Amazon AWS server, or renting a virtual machine to host your own VPN on?

This seems like an unfortunate situation that you have so I’m gonna call in the really techy people for any other advice they can think of...

Thanks Norman, the only thing I think I would be able to do as I am not a very techy person is using an Amazon AWS Server, but I am not sure how that works

@Ryker a far easier method would be to get yourself a Mobile Broadband dongle and use that. If you are not a techy person, setting up your own VPN either using an aws server or not, is not exactly a cake walk, not to mention then the connection could still be picked upon and blocked by your school.

Something like this: http://www.three.co.uk/Discover/Devices/Huawei/HomeFi?memory=0&colour=Black it's a little more expensive than general VPN offerings, but you just plug this in to power - no other connections required, and (assuming you live in an area with good 3 reception) you'll have a 4G data connection that you can use for all your various internettings.

This seems Great! Thank you so much @Zeito . I will order one ASAP, but do you think it will be good enough to play on the server as if one has a slow internet they might as well not play due to the client side lag.

Quick Question @Zeito are the 24 pounds per month with also the Sim card or do I need to get the Sim card by itself? As it does mention it comes with like 40 GB.

Speed really depends on signal strength - before you buy anything, do a bit of research and find out what Three's reception is like in your area. It's probably pretty good, but worth checking. From what i can gather from the page, you could be looking at speeds of upto 50mbit possibly 150. In practise it will likely be lower, but it should be enough to game on i believe.

The £24/month cost for that includes the sim card and 40gb of data a month. It's a 12 month contract, or if you pay £60 upfront, you can do it month to month, with no tie-in or obligation.

Understood, Thank you very much for the help. I will find out if Three's Reception is good here.
Again Thank you very much.

@Zeito I convinced my parents to get me the Broadband. When I went to a three-store they told me that A) I need to be 18 Years Old B) I have to have a bank account in the UK. I am not/don't have both of these. So the guy I was talking to recommended me to go to plus.net and try it there. I had no issues there until I found out I must have a Land Line Phone Number and if I don't they can send an engineer to install it for me for a fee. The issue is I can not just randomly install a Land Line in the school just for me to play games.

Are there any other options I could take that would enable me to play on RPUK?

I very much doubt it. You wont be able to install said phone line at your school, no way no how.

Short of your parents opening a bank account in the UK, funding it, and taking out the Mobile Broadband contract on your behalf - you are more or less out of luck. You could maybe try getting very chummy with the schools IT administrator to see if a port can be wired to your dorm room, with some restrictions lifted outside of class hours or something, but again this is massively unlikely to happen i imagine.

I mean, there is no harm in asking the school IT dept, i assume you must have some kind of internet access in your dorm room, all you'd need is an interface (ethernet port) with the ports for Arma + TS opened up to the roleplay.co.uk domain. In effect that port in your room would be the only one able to connect to the RPUK servers. It's all possible on a technical level - but it depends on your school policies, and the IT dept.

Do you have a mobile phone? Who pays for that?

@Zeito

I do have a mobile phone number with Vodaphone, but it is a "Pay as you Go" as I need a bank account in the UK for Pay Monthly.

I will try and speak with the IT Department and see what they say. I doubt it will work, but it is definitely worth a shot.

Also, I could use the landline of the school. My questions in regards of that is

A) Could the school detect it very easily

B) Is it illegal

No you wont be able to use the schools landline. You would need access to the Master Socket for the phone line in order for the DSL model.router to be installed, and then that'd need wired through to your dorm room. It's a non-starter. The school would detect it as soon as the engineer arrived to install the equipment etc. It's just not going to happen.

Unless the IT department is incredibly forgiving and will do what i mentioned above with a port for you, you will unfortunately just have to knuckle down until the end of the school year.
