My friend has been telling me he wants to try it out and I can't figure out if i need radiation pills, where do i get them from, if i need the pickaxe and a couple more. So, what do i need for an uranium run?

You need a uranium suit/helmet your truck /helli and a pick axe, you buy the pills from the dealer 

oh yeah don’t forget your Poseidon trade pass

uranium helmet (Hugo Ross)

pickaxe  (Market)

truck or helicopter (Garage)

urinium processing license (urinium processor, think it’s 500k?)

Optional

Radiation pills (Uriniuam Buyer) could get poisioned 

trade pass (Poseidon checkpoint or offices) you may get stopped by Poseidon

I tried and got poisoned, I took the pills but I still died, do I have to take the pills before I go to the uranium field or something?

no the poisoning won't kill you (unless that's changed recently) you sure you were wearing the right clothing in the field? both the helmet and the suit?

As DJ has said, without the correct clothing you will die almost instantly and the pills will do nothing as they remove the effects of being poisoned not protect you from radiation itself.
