To save up for a new PC...

I already have a sum of money that I have been saving up for the past 2 years now, and I've decided it's time to say goodbye to my shitty 20fps wonder in the near future.

My question is, how much would I be looking at spending to get a PC with a smooth 50-60 fps on Altislife? I don't need a specific list of parts just yet, because I'm certain I won't have enough money, but I'm just looking for a bit of guidance for when I have the money within the year.

My specs : AMD A8-6600k (3.9 ghz quad core) Saphire R7 260X (OC) 6gb RAM (DDR3) 1tb Hard drive Windows 8.1Cooler master 212 evo (Cpu)

PS: I'm currently in college, have been looking for a part time job for a long time and am getting nowhere... Just waiting to go to uni.

High end CPU for good fps in arma

Probably you can get the new GPU Nvidia is releasing soon for good money=/=performance like the 900 series

So all around

1000-1200 should be the ideal pricerange of good, futureproof And extremely ideal

i wrote 2000 instead of 1200 im dumb

Whole new build or are you keeping anything from the oldie?

Short answer is about 800-1000+

Why you no SSD?

Edit. I really need to read posts....

Ok so, As I said already, sort answer would be to set aside at least 800 quid, because let's face it - you want to make a stonker.

Depending on if you're selling this machine on or planning to ditch it will change some things. For example, the 212 evo is a good cooler and will do both intel and AMD chips, you can probably hold on to that 1tb HDD, and that R7260X isn't TERRIBLE but you can always replace that down the line.

Ideally for arma as stated ,you want a CPU with excellent performance on a single thread. For this the way is the Holy Church of Intel.

You'll want:

CPU: Intel i5-6600k or the I7-6700k. There are those who will say the i7 is wasted on most games, however as the flagship of the line, it offers the best perofmance, but the i5 is no slouch. Make sure it's a 6600k or 6700k, as the K refers to it being unlocked and overclockable.

GPU: Your R7260X will probably tide you over if you're somewhat strapped for cash after the rest of the parts, but if replacing I'd say get a GTX970. It's powerful, and it doesnt cost the earth. If you're gaming in 1440p/1600p/4k Then skip the 970 and go for the 980 or 980TI.

CPU Cooler: If you're keeping anything from the old computer - hold on to that 212 EVO cooler if you have the Intel Brackets for it. If not, you can just buy another i guess, they're not very dear. If you want to venture into AIO coolers - the Corsair H80i GT is great though a little noisier than air coolers. High-end air coolers like the Noctua DH15 or the BeQuiet Dark Rock Pro are also absolutely amazing. If you want to do customer watercooling - i cant help you, but research research research. Consider practicing on the old pc if theres nothing to lose.

Motherboard: You'll need an Intel Z1xx series motherboard to work with the 6600/6700k CPUs. Go for whatever brand you like that has the features you want and fits your color scheme.

Case: Case is a big part of the build. You want to make sure you have cable routing holes, plenty of space to work in, but at the end of the day its all about looks and if you like it. I have a  Corsair 600T White an its massive and gorgeous. I built my housemates computer in a NZXT Phantom 410 and it's a beauty too.

HDD/SSD: Arma (and your PC in general) benefits massively in performance from an SSD. Samsung 850 EVOs are excellent drives. You'll want 500GB minimum really. If the motherboard you're getting support m.2 NVME drives, you can consider one of these for storage (booting is a bit of a ballache to set up on m.2 nvme if you're not technical) but they're pricey. As I said before, keep that 1TB hdd for your main drive, install the games to the SSD. Fast boot times are nice, but you boot the pc up once, Arma will be loading textures off that SSD constantly.

PSU: PSU is THEE main component. It's plugged into EVERYTHING else, and carries the main power, so dont skimp out, have it blow, and kill your whole new PC. Go for a recognised brand. Depending on the components you go for, you'll likely need at least 500W but less than 1KW. When you pick the parts on PC PartPicker, it'll give you a rough estimate on Power - always get a bit higher than required to allow for expansion and heavy power demands.

OS: You will have to buy a new windows licence technically. It's only £100 so dont be tight and pirate it. Security and all that.

Peripherals: I guess you're probably holding on to them but they are all at your own preference.

Typed that out in a rush, so if i missed anything just ask.

Seeing as this community is full of NVIDIA fanboys and PC masterrace lads,I have to present my slavic PC building guide aswell.

All that i'll say is for a PC for a normal person in a college, not bloody Master of Engineering with 10 years practise.Apply only if you don't want to sell a kidney and decide your set budget.

CPU: So first off I have to partailly agree with @Zeito,for Arma go for intel although I highly advise to cheap out on it and buy a 4690k,it's getting cheaper as skyleke moves in,yet it's pretty much exactly same performance in gaming.

GPU:

The GPU you've is fine, for 1080p gaming go for the R9 380,it's much better than the 960 and it's much cheaper than the 970 I highly doubt that as a college student with no full time job you'll be gaming on anything above 1080 @ 60 Hz but if you do,go for the R9 390,it's better pticed than the 970,has similar perfromance and 8 GB of ram instead of 3,5(might come in handy in future years)

DISC: Moving onto the SSD yes you definetly want one to speed up Arma 3 load times and remove frame stutters, altthough NVME drive for a college student again is total bullshit,it's enthusiast grade gear that you most likely won't be able to buy any time soon and will not get that big of a gain in gaming.

Go for the 850 EVO yes,but for 250 gb,partition it for 50 GB system storage and 200 gaming storage(Arma ,DayZ,Rust etc).Get yourself a proper 7200 RPM hardrive (seagate recommendet, eventually WD).You'll msot liekly never need more than 1 GB unless you start recording.

CASE:

Case is not important at all,get anything that supports 2,5 inch bays and you should be fine, unless you're a bloody maniac and want to spend 100 GBP on aesthetics when you're on tight budget.

PSU:

PSU is indeed important,go for anything over 500 W from known dealer(Corsair or EVGA for example),unless  yuo decide to SLI/Crossfire you won't need anyting above 650 W for a 4690k and a R9 390.

Cooler:

Stick with the 212 evo,it's a great cooler for it's rpice and you won't need anything better for a good overclock (4,5GHz easily)

MOBO:

Mobo should be a Z97 series mobo as you want that OC capability, they aren't that expensive anymore and it's much better deal than the Z170 silliness.

OS:

You can get a windows 7 key for cheaper and activate it until late July this year

for windows 10,if you won't buy anything until that just go for the cheapest x64 Win 10.

RAM:

Go for any CL 9 8 GB kit,i'd go for 1866 MHz and OC it a lil bit but you can cheap out on 1600 MHz,make sure it's CL9 tho,the timings are far more important than you'd think

Some good points raised by @dzul, if you are on a tighter budget, the 4790k is an excellent CPU - I have one myself and it runs arma like a champ. The specs I through up there are for a good, nice looking, powerful pc that will last, using the latest components available.

I should also point out that by moving to the Skylake 6600/6700 cpus will also require you to buy all new DDR4 memory which is expensive. So the 4790k is probably a better choice.

But if you're living at home, have a part time job, and you're getting that sweet sweet student grant and loan - mix and match and put up the spec you think fits your needs and budget and we can all pore over it until it's the best you can get. You could called it Gillette.

I've no clue how student's earnings look in the Uk but in Poland it's pretty grim,so only  cash you've left is for bottles of vodka and adidas tracksuits xaxaxaxa))))))

Also if you want any help on raising Arma 3 performance on your current PC just message me,i'm running it @ stable 30-50 FPS on AMD Fx-6300 @ 4,4 GHz

Only points im really going to disagree with is this, Dont partion your drive to 50GB, I have my server (running windows 7) on a 56GB drive and constantly have to balance space which can cause issues.

If you "can" get the 500GB one do it, as with the samsungs you only get 208GB usable space, personally I can deal with it, it doesn't bother me to much as i keep all my files in order, but it would be "nice" to have more. if you don't have the money for it though, don't bother.

Ram, Tbh, 8 GB just doesn't cut it any longer (lazy coders  (just booting windows & firefox = 3.7GB used already)), especially if your going with a SSD you want to turn off page file, and increase the reliability and lifespan of your SSD.

You simply don't know the slavic ways of using a PC ))))))

heheheh, 50GB just doesnt cut it for OS and a few programs nowadays !

Lol, why don't you get a fucking job you broke ass bitch?
If you read the post properly, (which I suppose would also entail you stop being an inconsiderate internet troll), you'll notice that I have tried to find a part time job, however as a college student, it's rather difficult.

@Zeito @lionel @dzul@Lemmen Thanks for the help!

@Banana Duck, I have an SSD funnily enough, but I'm waiting to stick it into the new PC when I buy it.

@Jamz You know what to do...
