I've always thought it a good idea to record what I'm playing, just in case something funny, criminal, or pure random happens (looking at you @Vladic Ka). I have OBS, and I've used that to successfully stream in the past.

HOWEVER

I tried streaming Arma the other day, and the frame rate and video quality from OBS was terrible. It started lagging up the actual game. When I turned it off recording (even without streaming) it was fine.

My question to you fine people is ... what do I do? I also have Shadowplay, but I've never used it. Streaming software isn't really my forte.

The thing with streaming is, its not just the software and whatnot.  Can your hardware actually handle encoding the stream while also running the game at the resolution of choice? Is your upload speed good enough? Have you modified the settings within OBS to be tailored to your machines capabilities? Also is it the old OBS or OBS Studio?

Like I said in the original post:

I've used that to successfully stream in the past and it was messing up the computer even without streaming (i.e. when it was just recording to the harddisk).

Well there goes me not reading again *headdesk*.  I guess the relevant question here then is which version of OBS are you using, Old one or the new "Studio" one?  Even when its just recording it still has to do some encoding and whatnot.

The old one, I think. I'm going to give Shadowplay a go, which might work a bit better. Hopefully will, considering that it's just recording what it's pushing to the screen, rather than capturing what's already on the screen.

Worth a shot, from what I've been hearing Shadowplay doesn't effect frames, never tried it myself to be honest.   It might be worth looking at OBS Studio seeing as thats the one they're actually developing now (Old OBS is defunct), I've noticed that it's a lot easier on the hardware compared to the old version of OBS

Ah, fair enough. I didn't even know there was a new one!

Shadow play is awesome. Very easy to set up.

There are many many many videos on YouTube about how to set up OBS for recording and streaming quality settings. I don't use it to record but I know a lot of big youtubers do. If I'm on TS later give me a shout if you are still having issues.

I would recommended Plays TV It automatically records for you when you start up a recognised game and you can select preferences to how you want to record and what settings. It's perfect for me and I use it to record all my ins and outs for Arma III and also use it for other games like CS:GO because it even time stamps kills and deaths on the clip reel.
