Starting as a Newbie, From a Newbie

Esqy

Well-known member
Hey All,

As as a result of my amazingly horrible 1st experience See This Thread  - I persevered and it got better.

Seeing as I have had to re-start so often, I thought I'd do a cheeky guide for any new Citizens - This is coming from a Newbie himself (4ish days, 6 or 7 deaths, about 15 muggings and 3 cars nicked).

The Esqy Guide

AKA: Things I would have wanted to know on day 1

General conduct

The first thing to note that this is a HIGH ROLEPLAY SERVER - So when you talk to people, you are not in a game, you did not spawn. You are on an island and just woke up. You have not been on the island that long or you have just arrived and are jet-lagged - Hence why you are asking simple questions.

Make sure are familiar with the basic controls (See Here)

You are not a Newbie, New Player or Noob - You are a Hobo.

If someone 'Passes you a note' Look on the bottom left of your screen and there will be a Direct Communication starting //. This indicates that it is Out Of Character or OOC - Don't speak on the microphone about ARMA, being in a game or asking which keys to press.

You cannot see peoples names hovering above their heads - You don't know them until they tell you their name. If you have trouble with this, There is an option to hide them in the Game Settings.

When speaking to the Admin or Police, Address them as you would in real life - Although you don't know their name, You can address their Rank (Sergeant, Inspector, PC etc.) As in real life, the badge would be visible. 'Officer' is an easy fall-back title to use.

When you connect to the server, you will see a list of Roles on the left hand side. Everyone on the server has a role, and they are divided into 3 categories:

  1. Police (Blue Square)
  2. Medic (Green Square)
  3. Civilian (Purple Square)
You are a Civilian, So click on the Purple square and the find a free slot on the list that appears. It doesn't matter what 'Call sign' slot you are in, this is not referred to in the game. The Police and Medic roles are 'Whitelisted' - Which means you need to be approved by the Admin to play them (You can Apply for these through the main site/forums)

I recommend you spawn in Kavala

Microphone

You need a microphone. To use it press and hold CAPSLOCK while you are speaking. If it is not working check on the bottom left of your screen when you speak. It might say 'Group Chat'. If that's the case press . or , (Full stop or Comma) until it says 'Direct communication'

If that is all in order, Go into your Steam settings (Shift  + Tab, Settings on the bottom) and make sure your mic works in Steam.

Map

Press M to get your Map. Look for the green zone and head there. The Green Zone means that No-one can rob you or anything and it's a nice starting point.

Essentials

First of all, Lets get the basics. Pop to the ATM in Kavala and withdraw £10125

Head to 'General Store'. Look at the sign, and use your scrollwheel (You will use your wheel a lot). Pick up a GPS - they are only like £125 and Night Goggles (£5k). Don't worry about the other stuff. If it is night time, press 'N' to activate the goggles - These even work in vehicles.

You can then press RightCTRL + M for a mini map.

On the Main Map (M), you can use SHIFT + Click to set a waypoint - Useful when travelling a long way. Also, If you are going a long way, Its worth picking up a repair kit at the general store - Nothing worse than accidentally smashing into a rock and losing your wheels in the middle of nowhere. If you have a repair kit on you, you can use it by looking at your vehicle and pressing the windows key and clicking 'Repair vehicle'. Some vehicles have a repair kit with them. To get this, be in or near the car and press 'I'. You can move it from the left hand side onto your backpack or body.

Next is a Backpack. The biggest one costs £5k and is worth every pound. Make sure you still have £5k and head to the clothes shop (Check your map, its a couple of doors up) Select Backpack from the bottom drop-down, and get one of the bottom 2 backpacks. Once you buy it, That won't get robbed from you, although you do lose it, your GPS and Night Vision goggles if you die and respawn.

Hopefully by this stage a few of the mechanics will start to be second nature. If someone does tell you to put your hands up, do it with SHIFT + J. They will take any money on your person, so get into the habit of only carrying what you need, but ALWAYS try to talk your way out of it. 90% of the time, they wont care about talking, they just want to take your stuff (Which they can only do if you SHIFT+J) The 10% is always good roleplay.

Licence and Car

Getting mobile is pretty important, and to do that you need a DRIVING LICENCE and a CAR. Both of these will cost money, but luckily you get 100k FREE!

In the green zone, You will see a bunch of Civ shops (Check your Map).  You'll see an ATM on the wall. Face it and roll your mousewheel. You should see 'Cashpoint' on the top left of your screen. Press Space. This will allow you to withdraw money. A Driving licence is 5k and can be gotten from the DVLA building (Check map, its kindof north). If you are a little wary about having money on you, there is a cashpoint round the corner from the DVLA - on Map, it looks like a line drawing of a little house.

I can't recall the prices of the vehicles right now, but hey - Lets find them - So Look on your map, You will see the car shop close to where you are. Get onto the main road, and Run Forrest, Run! (Hold shift to run)  Keep checking your map to make sure you are heading the right way.

Once you get there, pop in and use your scroll wheel on Rodney Trotter to get the prices and to check stats - A good one to note is the trunk space. Pop to an ATM (On your map an icon that looks like a line drawing of a mini house) and take out enough money for your selected vehicle. This is a hotspot for robberies, so scout it out carefully or just having nothing on you.

When you buy your car, Make sure there is no-one else around - I have had stuff stolen straight away. Once bought, It will appear in the car park. Approach the car or bike and press 'U'. This unlocks it. While facing the car If your icon is a steering wheel, press space and you will get in. If not, scroll the mousewheel until 'Get in as driver' is selected in the menu that appears on the top left of your screen.

Once in, Press 'U' again to lock it - This prevents people from just climbing in. If you get in as a passenger by mistake, just scroll to 'Get into driver seat' (The car will need to be unlocked for this). When you want to get out, scroll your wheel again to select it from the menu - If it just says 'Inventory' it means you need to Unlock the car, If it only says 'Eject' It means you are still moving. Try it :) . ALWAYS lock your car as soon as you get out, otherwise it WILL get stolen.

Also 'ENTER' on your number keypad changed between first and third person view for preference

Be aware that the newer vehicles can only be driven if you bought the APEX expansion - Quilin and the 4WDs from the car dealer, Any of the airplanes, and some of the pricier choppers (Huron is the highest you can get without it) and the RHIB boat are among them. Note, that you will be able to buy them and they will be in your garage, but you will be unable to get into them and drive them - So It'll be a waste of money

Noisy Copters

Shift + P. Reduces the noises of all the engines around you. Its really annoying if a chopper is hovering overhead.

Making Money

Usually a very early on question. My answer used to be Peaches, but after peer pressure, and a change in the map, I need to concede that it is apples and Cider. Head to the green zone. Once there, have a look on your map for Apple Trees to the north. This is the most direct and easy thing to do. Jump in your car/quadbike and head there.

Once there, go to a tree and press the Left Windows Key. Your guy will make a grabbing motion and peaches will appear in your bag. (Press Y to see). Keep doing this (Or hold down the windows key) until full. Walk to your car and press 'T'. Then transfer peaches to the trunk and repeat until your car is full. If you want to sell these at the market (Azder in Kavala), fill your backpack too. If you want to make Cider, leave it empty as you need swap space.

To sell the apples: Head back to the Greenzone, and walk into Azder. Scrollwheel + Space on the worker, and sell your peaches there. Don't forget to unload the apples from your car aswell!

To Cider them: Drive to the Cider press. It looks far, but it only takes a couple of minutes. When you arrive, take as many apples out of your truck as possible ('T'), then go to the guy in the building. Scroll and space - a progress bar appears. Then head to your car, swap cider for apples and repeat.

Once all done, Pop back to Kavala, and sell your cider at the pub - I'm sure you can figure out how! Don't forget to try one of your ciders.

When processing, you'll get EXP points and when you sell it you get RPUK skill points. Look at 'Further Reading' below to find out where to find info on what these are for.

There are other methods of money making (Legal and illegal), but they are all a bit more involved. You collect a resource, Go to a processing facility and process it, then go to a trader to sell it. They are more dangerous because they are more lucrative. They also require licences to process (Even the illegal things need one). You can buy the licence at the processing place - So be aware you will need some cash on you. For more info on this, Check out the awesome 'Hobo Guide' by@Alexim (Linky Linky) - The second post goes into detail for each of the legal means.

A word of warning -  baddies usually hang out at the 'Final Stage' of the process - So either robbing you of processed resource or the money you get after you sell it to the trader.

Again, LOCK YOUR CAR, even if getting out to surrender. As you make more money, You should start looking into getting a truck - You need a separate licence (Again from DVLA) and need to go to a different dealer (South of map, near Drug Dealer), and some of the runs are so long it is only really worth doing them with a truck full of stuff. Trucks don't cost much more than cars and they hold more, but are a fair bit slower.

You also make a 3k paycheck every 15 mins which is a nice bonus.

Logging out and back in

After you log out (For a time) and respawn you will have your backpack still on you with any stuff you had safe inside. Depending how long you have seen away will depend on where your vehicle is. If it's not been too long, It will be where you left it (Unless it was stolen). If it's been half an hour or so, it may have been impounded by the police. If it has been a long while (Over a server reset) it will be reset. A good way to check - Press 'Y' to bring up your iPad, and click 'Keychain'. That will tell you which cars you have out and how far away they are. I used this to track down a stolen truck once. They were glad to see me because I'd locked them in!

To get your car back after it has been impounded or reset - Head to the Green Zone, Get on the main (Orange) road and head north. On the right there is another Green Zone with a Garage. Head in there and scroll wheel on the sign. It will cost you to retrieve your vehicle, but that gets taken from your bank, so you don't need to be carrying cash.

If you leave your vehicle out in the open, There is a potential for someone to lockpick and steal it. If this happens and they take it to a scrapyard, Your car is lost. Ideally, when you are finished for the day, Head to a garage - Most cities have one - Park inside the area and scroll on the sign to 'Store Vehicle'. Also not that if the police are looking to impound your abandoned vehicle and see anything illegal in there, They will send it to be crushed, and you will lose it.

Guns

You don't need a gun yet. If you MUST have one, Get a firearms licence from the Government building and look on your map for a Gun Store - There is not one in Kavala. By the time you actually need a gun, You will have played enough to be able to ask about it In Character, In Game.

Being Killed

If you get killed, you will lie dying and you have the option of requesting a medic. It will show you the distance of the nearest one. Bear in mind as we saw when logging in, there are only a handful of medic spots (5 I think) and they cannot be everywhere at once. If you request it and see the distance reducing, just sit tight and prepare for your appropriate roleplay (See below)

If you are killed and not revived by a Medic, You will need to respawn. Again, I recommend Kavala. You will lose everything you had on you and will need to re-do a few of the bits above (Backpack and GPS). You also cannot return to your 'death zone' within the NLR timer on the left.

Basically this means that you cannot return to your area you died in (area being 1000m) within 15 mins. For roleplay purposes, You don't know who killed you or where you car is. The same vehicle procedures happen here as described above. It's worth having a cheap quadbike in your garage just so you have something to use until your car comes back. As the game progresses, No doubt you will accumulate a range of vehicles

If you need a better way to think about it - Treat 'Killed' as 'Got knocked out, Went to hospital and woke up with amnesia extending back to the start of your fatal encounter'. You can also read it as 'Dude - Where's my car?'

Also remember (as mentioned above) that you get paid £3k every 15 mins, So if you are short on cash after respwaning you can simply wait for a bit and you will have enough to at least start again.

Next Stage

Now you have a basic understanding of how the world works and the mechanics (Scrollwheel is your friend) - It doesn't take long to figure out how to do the other stuff available in the game. As with life, Try stuff, Fail it, then try again - Including stuff like robbing people, cars and houses - I won't explain how to because I don't know, And am not eager to find out - The risk is all yours.

If you are going to make a hobby out of robbing people, READ THE RULES -

  1. You MUST make voice contact (If you have no mic, do not play).
  2. You MUST tell them to put their hands up.
  3. You MUST tell them that you will shoot them if not.
  4. You MUST give them time to respond.
You have to tick ALL FOUR BOXES above before knocking someone out or shooting them. Be warned though, As soon as you threaten someone's life, they may respond with gunfire.

If possible, record the holdup with game recording software - You will get reported if people feel you are not doing it correctly (Even if you were - Getting mugged or killed is not a nice experience), and it's worth having proof that you are.

Have Teamspeak on and Ready for when the accusations come in.

Further Reading

Have a Read of the Stickied Hobo Guides in the Altis Life Forums - These are a LOT more detailed. If you have any other questions, I urge you to post on the Forum - Although there is an OOC (Out of Character) chat in-game, It can easily get flooded - If you have an issue with someone you think broke the game rules (Not the in-game law), talk to a police or admin, and be prepared to head onto TeamSpeak to talk it out.

Have a play with the player info by pressing 'Y' - You can gain skill points by doing things like collecting resources and selling stuff. It take 5 skill points to learn a skill.

The Profession tab has all the skill points from when you sell - The higher they are, the more effective you are at the chosen skill. There are odd ones on there (Banana and Chocolate for example), but they are for Tanoa. Have a really good look around so you know what's available to you.

Key Controls

Almost an FAQ of controls - Most are as you would expect in a game like this (Movement etc) So I won't cover them, Only ones that I have seen people ask about. Most are detailed in my guide above, so this is more of a Cheatsheet.

Mouse scrollwheel - The most important thing for interacting with people and things - Scroll the mouse and look at the options on the top left

  • Shift + J - Hands Up and Surrender
  • Shift + P - Earplugs - Lessens engine noises, but leaves voices at the regular level.
  • Shift + H - Holster weapon
  • Y - Player menu and info. Also you can Use items in your inventory from here (Food, Drink, Pickaxe)
  • U - Unlock and Lock car
  • Left Windows Key - Action Key - Used to interact with some things (Respray shop, fruit trees, buying houses etc)
  • Right CTRL + M - Mini Map (You must have a GPS from the General store)
  • On the main map: Shift + Left Click - Sets a waypoint
  • Enter (On num keypad) - Switch between 1st and 3rd person
Glossary of terms

Any term that has a rule associated will have a reference number for http://www.altislife.co.uk/rules/

  • ALUK - Atlis Life UK
  • ARAC - Not sure of the exact words, but they they are the Mechanics in the game (The AA or RAC) (Rules 8.3.x)
  • GZ - Green Zone - a Safe area on the map indicated by Green hashing (Rule 6)
  • NHS - National Health Service - This is the public health organisation in the UK and Medics in the game
  • NLR - New Life Rule - The 15min rule after dying as described above (Rule 5)
  • OOC - Out of Character
  • RP - Roleplay
  • RDM - Random Death Match. Killing someone without roleplaying (Rule 2.2)

  • VDM - Vehicle Death Match. Running someone down in your vehicle (Rule 2..1)
Side Chat

The text chat on the left hand side is 'Sidechat' and there are a few different channels that have different uses. Please be aware that you cannot use or refer to any information that appears in the sidechat (Or indeed on the alerts at the top right of the screen) as this is considered Metagaming and is bannable.

To scroll through the channels use ',' and '.' (Comma and Full Stop) and to send a message into the chat use '/' (Forward slash). If the message starts with // it means it is Out Of Character - Please only use OOC tags if it is really necessary.

Grey: Direct communication - This is speaking to the people in you immediate area and should be your default channel

Green: Group Channel - Used to communicate within your group - Also knows as your gang! You can make a gang by pressing 'Y' and then clicking on 'My gang'

Yellow: Vehicle - Used to speak to the people who are riding in the same vehicle as you - Make sure you switch to this if you are in a car with your mates

Blue: OOC - Mostly used when people are requesting TS meetings or are after admin/management assistance. Try not to use it if possible. Do NOT use voice in this channel

Anyhow, Have a Fun game, Feel free to hit me up if you need any help (Press 'Y' Go to 'Mobile' and you can text people from there)

This was good reading @Esqy specially since I have been reading your other post on your first experience!

I think this can be to good help for some of the new arrivals here.
For a bit more in dept info about prices and some other good "Hobo" tips you can check out the "Hobo Guide" from @puppy1004

Glad to see that you are getting settled on the Island.

Thanks Everyone!

And also thanks for linking the Hobo's Guide - I was intending to pop a link to the end, but forgot!

It's not been easy, But I will maintain that being a good guy will eventually pay off! This was mostly ade because my 1st hour, I had literally no idea where to go or what to do - That may have contributed to my various adventures!

This is an excellent guide, thank you for writing this. Hopefully anyone coming through will get to read it before they join. Mind if I start linking it when welcoming people in the Arrivals section?

Nicely done!

I would say however the bit about respawning,  may be worth mentioning the basics of NLR there :)

Good type up and was good to read :)

Thanks you very much. By all means link it - It now belongs to the Forums, so it can be used, abused and recreated as need be :) (Although do credit me if its used, Will be nice to know who I help)

Good Idea, I'll pop that in now.

Thanks Very much :)

@Esqy

Very well written! If you allow it, I am more than happy to pin this post in the Altis chat section so that it is a bit easier to find!

I have a feeling this thread will help quite some new players and in my opinion it is definitely worth pinning it :)

edit: I'll send you a PM so that we can discuss this a bit further

No Problem at all. I'm always eager to help. And also it shows that even new players have something to offer :)

I didn't want to get too much into the mechanics of stuff I don't really know, but it means that the first hour or so of a brand new citizens life will actually yield something, and can provide a solid foundation - The rest of it can be found out in-game or by searching the forums, and the techniques above (Buying stuff, gathering resources) shouldn't be a challenge from a 'Button pressing' POV. It should be challenging from an in-game POV (Security, Efficiency etc.) It would be a shame for someone to get shot simply because the did not know about SHIFT + J

@EsqyAwesome job with the guide(Especially as you're new yourself)  this will really help all newbies to the server!!

Definitely will refer to this guide(if ok) when new people join the forums :)

Great guide Esqy!

After reading your original post I gathered that you were having a rather tough time, which makes this guide all the better, as it's come from someone who has really endured the struggles of a newbie starting the server with a tendency for bad luck!

The quality of this post and attention to the rules from a player only a couple of days old is outstanding, I can tell you're going to be a valued member of our community in the coming future!

Give yourself a pat on the back,

I think I can be comfortable in saying thanks on behalf of ALUK,

Harry

This is some really really good stuff here @Esqy

There is already chatter of adding this to the player guide but for now I will sticky this to the top of the chat.

Well done.

Thanks Harry :)

I'm a great believer in 'If you wish you knew it, Someone else wished that aswell'. It would be a massive shame to lose a brand new player just because some idiot decides it's fun to continuously rob the starting area stores. A result of the feedback from my misadventures, I was going to suggest a new rule - A player can't be robbed by the same person/group within a set time limit.  It just wears you down after a while! - I'll pop a suggestion in the correct forum once I get a better feel for how to phrase it :)

@Vladic KaThank you! I did not expect this to become as big as it has! After my initial experiences of wandering around aimlessly, getting killed and having to reset while trying to figure out the controls and mechanics AND maintain roleplay immersion, I figured that this may help others find their feet a bit quicker. Also, It will look good on my NHS application in the future - When I have gotten more comfortable with them maps and controlling the vehicles. Hey, I gotta use all the resources I got :p.  Also, Being a medic will be a way for me to be involved in a Treasury Job without robbing or Policing :)

Thank You :)

I'll tidy it up a bit this evening - Sort out some spelling and grammar errors, and Maybe spruce it up with some fancy colours to make it easier to read.
