I did not see a post about this game at all, this is one of my old passions and past times, so thought I would share some of the experiences and tell a bit about the game!

In Space Station 13, you play as a crew member on a Space Station, the whole idea behind the game is every person has a job to do, if everyone does perfectly the station will run perfectly fine, however if people do bad stuff, you will be seeing things like a blackhole
9lRFj7O3KQX3XFMOEr-b0pjq72KKm8biiLLUdZG5-1BEsH5LeVdKii2SMlNumn-X5-zPZ5s=s86
 or just a demon

. But everything is not bad on your little space station, there is a lot of fun to be had, like hit the clown

  (Captain Ian for the win).

Though enough of the randomness, lets talk about what is really important, the game itself. You will pick a role warying from a assistant to the Captain of the station himself, where your job depends on your choice, and you might think that the jobs are easy, you will be wrong again. This game is not easy at all, to give you a good example as a medical doctor, you will need to learn how to do surgery, failing just a tiny bit will kill your subject, you can fail several ways, from accidentially hitting him in the head with a drill to "Accidental" removal of brian.

However what makes this game special is that when you start a game, your character stays there until the end which can take hours, where you by the end will see a lot of dead people and "sleeping" people, however there is systems in place to make sure jobs can be reaquired. By the end of a round, the players either escape the station with the shuttle or by death. The kind of death also depend on the current rounds antagonist, which will be explained later on so I can go in more detail with each of them.

Myself I usually play as the Virologist, meaning it is my job to find cures to several viruses and create helpful ones, which can benefit the whole station with the lovely goodness of health.

To talk about the roles you can play as, I will only take some of them, since there is currently in the game 23 jobs, 10 antagonist roles and 5 special roles.

Command:

Every leader of a section is in the command section, however there is 2 roles that are special for this role only, that is the Captain and the Head of Personnel. Captains job is to lead his people into a brighter future, and protect his keycard from the random people trying to steal it. However his main goal is to make sure, none gets the launch codes of the nuke hidden on the ship, which happens more often than you would think. Head of Personnel is the person who gives out jobs for all the people on the ship, making sure everyone can swap around between jobs, plus helping people get into jobs later on.

Security:

The security section is run by the Head of Security, and is the place where all Officers spawn and is the place they work, in this area you have the armory, jail cells, interigation rooms and the life detention cells (Officers don't kill you, they just detain you for life). Your job in security will be patroling the ship, stopping criminals from taking over the station, making sure the clown gets imprisoned and in general keeping the peace.

Med Bay:

The Medical Bay is lead and run by the Chief Medical Officer, who is in charge of all medical actions taking place, from the illucid drug making chemists, to the slightly crazy geneticist using monkeys to create super powers. The place day to day is run by the Medical Doctors, who will make you a amputee because of your burn damage on your arm (Yes every kind of damage, has different treatments). Jobs in the medical section is, Chief Medical Officer, Virologist, Geneticist, Chemist and Medical Doctor.

Robotics:

On a future Space Station, of course there will be a robotics section. The job of the Robotics section is to create robots(Duh) from humans(Wat), this is done by making a Cyborg exo-skeleton and inputting a human brain into it. This will give the brain full functional control of the body(and be enslaved by the AI). What they do when they're not making human robots, is creating power armor to help miners on planets and give the Captain a bit more defense so his nuke does not get stolen.

Mining:

To keep a ship running, you will need materials and ores to create more metal, that is where the mining team comes in to the picture. They start off in the Maintenance section of the ship and will immediately be taking a shuttle to an asteroid, where you will be mining for materials. Just be careful, you might find things you don't want
APQ0VEbFT4pGnaLYFnVW2OWUeq5Km4erK-6FAHcyL_Wp2BK3q1nmRtdcvI9fhBRB9P_w7nQ=s152
yes Xenomorphs are in the game, and they will start off as being found on the mining asteroid, wipe out the mining team and then proceed to the station to kill everyone. So be careful of what you mine, and what you bring back with you, as it can cause havoc and the end of humanity on the space station. Well back to happiness, the other role in the Mining area is the Quartermaster, his job is to call in supplies and trade with other stations, all from more booze for the bar to heavy weapons for security, when he is not doing that, he is ignoring the many people trying to get him, to give them a shipment of viruses.

Engineering:

Lead by the Chief Engineer, this team of engineers is the people keeping the power running on the station, but not only that they also keep the air flowing, and making sure the plasma is not released into the pipes. This is one of the harder jobs, because if failed you will create a blackhole that destroys the station. However don't worry, since making sure that works is not your only job, as a engineer you get access to a space suit, meaning you can enter the outside without a hinge, and create whole new sections on the ship of you so desire. Creating new sections is not a easy task though, since you have to build everything from the ground up, start with the scarfold then the floor, walls and then ventilation for air and electricity.

Science:

Be Bill Nye the Science Guy! There is several areas in Science you can work, Xeno Biology, Teleportation, Toxins and Artifact Lab, are the 4 most common areas you will be dealing with. Xeno Biology, you create slimes, feed them(Try to not get eaten while doing so) and doing tests on them to learn things. Teleportation is the art of Teleporting around, throw yourself into space with a wrong press and die a slow and agonizing death. Toxins is the research that creates bombs, quite literal they make bombs. Last but not least is Artifact Lab, this is the lab where the Scientists does research on the Alien Artifacts that the Mining team can find on the asteroid, these artifacts can greatly increase the technology level of the station, which in turn makes the station more advance. The Science department is lead by the Research Director.

AI:

You can in this game also play as the almighty AI, who follow the three laws of robotics. The AI has the complete power of all systems on the ship, making it a unstoppable force to mess with if you decide to do so. But the AI is not perfect, it can go rogue by either a person entering its input area and inserting own laws into it, to the creation of a secondary AI (Yes you can build a AI).

Antagonists:

Traitor:

Anyone can become a traitor, no matter what job you have. As a traitor you normally get two tasks, kill x person and recieve y item. The person can be anyone and the item can range from a chefs hat to the Chain of Command (Captains Whip).

Nuclear Operative:

Your job is to enter the station, get the launch codes, activate the nuke and escape the station.

Wizard:

You are a Wizard Harry
ZgO9XXBaN8-BKFvsk_eLMGU8o9DQmweTZDIJMBOFn6YhddtP_R0LKakHmA-El3o_g1na_g=s88

Changling:

Kill people, take over people, become people, kill more people.

Cultist:

You are a cultist, trying to summon the great lord! How though? You first need to get followers, then make summoning circles, then say the magical words just right. If done correctly 1 demon lord will arrive and destroy everyone.

Own experiences:

I started up a game of Virologist, I took a beaker into my hand and a syringe with the cold virus in the other. I wanted to inject the cold virus into the beaker, but accidentally injected myself. The CMO did not trust me when I said it was a cold, and he could remove the lockdown from Virology, so after 15 minutes of talking and explaining, he finally gave me the cure and I could work on. 10 minutes later I injected myself with a air transimitted brain rot disease, CMO walked in because he thought it was cold. Whole of Medical Bay died from Brain Rot, station exploded.

Other story, I decided to play Engineer, I went to a door that just refused me opening it, and I looked at it with mean eyes. I used my tools to open it, forgot to wear the right gloves. Died from eletrocution.

With that I think, I will stop here as I'm this far into the post but only explained some key functions of the game and did not even cover the civilian side of the game, which also could take a while. I have always liked this game and can recommend it, the game is 2D however its immersion is amazing. Gameplay may vary from server to server, as it is a game free to be modded and changed in any way and there is several versions of it out there.

Edit: I don't mean to hijack your thread, only help you. You might want to back up and emphasize that rounds restart and things reset after every round. Nothing is persistent. Before a round starts you have some time to pick what job(role) you want. The way this works is you would go into your setting and there would be a list of all the jobs on the station. You would then mark what job you want to play the most. If you wanted to be the Captain you would mark it as "High"... nevermind it's hard to explain. Here's some pictures.

Anyway you can only pick one "High" job/role and as many low and medium as you want. If you pick "High" you have a better chance of getting the job. If two people pick "high" on the same job you have a 50% chance of getting it, assuming it's a unique role like the captian where there can only be one person in the role. Jobs that can only have one person include Captian, AI(artificial intelligence, A computer that helps out the crew doing stuff they need and can interact with electronics), Cyborg(Under the command of the AI but has a physical body), any of the command(Heads of staff), Warden, chaplain, libarian, janitor, mime, chef, and finally bartender. I know it sounds like a lot of unique jobs, and it is, but it makes for great roleplay. Servers can easily support 100 people, so no issues there.

Oh. Special roles. Special roles allow brakes in the norm and allow for different RP, or even combat.

Traitors: You usually have objectives like stealing high value items, assassinate people, ect. You get special items to help you achieve your objectives.

Operative: Syndicates. They want to steal the nuclear disk and blow up your station. Pretty interesting RP background.

Changeling: You're a DNA eating monster. Your objective is to absorb as many DNA genomes as possible by literally sucking it out of people and killing them.  You can transform into them, use your stinger to sting people next to you, making them unable to see, talk, or move depending on what chemical cocktail you use.

Wizard: You're a wizard harry!

Revolutionary: You're unhappy with the current command and you must convert as many people as possible and retake what's yours from those who oppress you!

Cultist: Praise the almighty Nar'Sie (demon god) Similar to revolutionary with a different flavor. Convert as many people as you can and eventually with a blood sacrifice summon the almighty Nar'Sie.

Blob: Literally a blob that invades the station, taking it over and eventually destroying it. The crew must get over their petty differences and unite to save the station.

PAI: Knockoff AI in your pocket. Mostly filled by dead players that are unable to be revived.

When a round starts you're greeted with this:

y0Z8WRx.png

Sorry for the paint, I don't want to be had for "advertising". This is normal for all servers.

Pipe networks are for atmospherics, and garbage chutes.

Atmos machinery is for atmos, Atmos cleans the air in the station and keeps you breathing. Atmos is modeled in the game very well. For example if there is a leak into space you will lose air and it will even create a vacuum, sucking items and even people out into the vacuum of space.

Making a mess: It would be boring for the janitor and even the crew if you had a perfect ship every round. This puts some garbage, blood, puke, a few rats, ect. around the station to make it a little messy so it doesn't look perfect.

The most important thing about this picture is that it tells you the possible game modes and that the server is set so you don't know what mode it is. More about game modes later.

PxNvP8u.png

Here's what the game looks like. The black tiles are things that you can't see. You'll notice the overlay showing your health, oxygen toggle, inventory, intent indicator, aiming(Crotch), An open door with the wiring exposed (The popup center left is what happens when you click the door, allowing you to hack the door with wirecutters, a multitool, or even attach a signaler to mess with the door remotely. Things you can do with a door include killing the power, bolting it similarly to a bank door, opening it, electrifying it, and killing the ID card recognition for secured doors.

+9000 great game. 2d spessmanz is pretty good for RP, and lots of fun combat. I've played it for years.

Fun fact. I got my name from space station 13. In SS13 everyone talks about how "Robust" they are. I was joking when I made the name and it just sort of stuck. Robust- Rob Ust. :p

SS13 is easily modifiable and requires no mods to run. Everything is basically a "mission file". With the way Space station 13 works file size is very small and doing any sort of modification is really easy so it would be hard to say "No" to adding something, Your only limit would be how much time the coders have. If ALUK wanted to start a server it wouldn't be hard to find an open source project and take an hour to ALUKify it. Basically what we know was the mission file is known as the source code in SS13 speak. Slap the source code on your server and you're good to go. Administration is very easy, I have SS13 administration experience and would be willing to help, if people were interested.

Nothing like roleplaying with the clown only to have some syndicates try to come and steal the nuke disk and blow up your station. It's always fun running around prying up floor tiles and launching them at syndicates like frisbees, absolutely wrecking them.

The great thing about SS13 is the sheer amount of jobs and things you can do. In science you can do sciencethat involves gathering items around the station and destroying them to advance technology, eventually learning how to teleport things, evolve animals, make massive bombs, and generally be dangerous. In robotics you can use what the scientist learned to build things like cyborgs, mechs, weapons, ect. There is generally a police force, medics, chemists, quatermaster, miners, clowns, mimes, A command structure similar to how ALUK is set up, and even hobo's. Oh did I forget to mention engineers? All the powergamers would love to be an engineer. An engineer starts with gear, namely a toolbelt full of tools to get into any part of the station including the police armory.

SS13 is very complicated. For example there are chemists that can create many chemicals and compounds in their laboratory generally located in the medical bay under the Chief Medical Officers supervision. Chemicals commonly found on a chemist include poly acid (Can kill you or at the very least destroy items and can even strip off your clothes. Thermite can melt through walls. Chemists also have access to grenades and can make these chemicals into a gas, making it possible to manufacture metal grenades, useful to plug a hole in the station, trap someone, or use it to get away from people. One of the funnest grenades is a simple water grenade, useful for making people slip, allowing you to escape. As I'm sure you can tell SS13 is very complex and has a lot of systems and things you can do. SS13 has a full atmospherics system and if you change it (A job called atmospherics technician, under the command to of the chief engineer) You can kill everyone aboard the station about 20 different ways, or set the station on fire. A robust medical system allows you to stab people in the eyes with a screwdriver to blind people, you could do hobo surgery with a shard of glass from a broken window, in place of going to the medical bay and having them preform the surgery, at a lower risk of injury ofcourse. In virology you can cure diseases, viruses, and even create monster viruses. SS13 has a amazingly robust building system that allows you to build your own station with power generation and atmospherics. Power is supplied by a singularity, or solar power. You can place wiring for powered equipment, walls, anything you can imagine you can build.

Enough gushing about how much of a great game it is, check out this video and these pictures to get a feel for it.

I remember when this first came out on Byond and how it has evolved. I used to run my own server back in the day.

It's a fun little game.

Dean Rocket from the DayZ series is working on a new game called Ion inspired by SS13. Look forward to it keep an eye out.

Community manager of a popular SS13 server here - can definitely say it is a brilliant and active game that has a very steep learning curve. Will happily teach anyone here how to play but will have to run it by management first before I give details of said community.

@Mr Cardoso

This is a fun little free game, and the roleplay can be hilarious. Alan B and I have been in discussion, and he doesn't wish to break any advertising rules, but he helps run a server for this (The game itself can be ran from a computer due to the simple resources required). Would we be able to try and get some players together to try this out on his server? It's a simple 2D interface, but it has a steep learning curve, especially when it comes to playing each role on the station (Engineer, Electrician, Doctor, Scientist/Genetics, etc...)

Fun little things you can do in this game if you know what you're doing:

-Kidnap players, using genetics and turning them into a monkey.

-Rerouting power supply and cutting off power/oxygen to parts of the station

-Playing god as a genetic scientist and causing a player to become mute, blind, deaf, etc...

-Turning tools into deadly weapons, chairs into electric chairs, setting traps, etc...

-Tricking players into getting sucked out an airlock into space.

-Flooding the station with deadly flammable plasma gas and causing a massive fire that will engulf the station

-Marooning a player into space by shoving them in a locker, welding it shut, and throwing the locker into space while giving a breathing tank to said player so they won't die.

-Playing the chaplain role and convincing the station that a member is possessed by demons and to purge them with a exorcism by fire

-Poisoning food/drinks

-Playing the atmospheric technician and creating sleeping gas to knock out players, or trapping them into a room and cutting off the oxygen to suffocate them.

Very complex, brilliant for roleplay! I've adminstrated various servers for this and I must remark how I've never enjoyed another game equally as much. :)

It really does sound like a unique and hilarious concept, I'm going to download this a little later if anyone is up for a ALUK get together.
