Currently when in a race, at the bottom right you can see your best lap and "current" time, but the current time actually records total time in the race. My suggestion is to change the "current" timer or add a new timer to display the current lap time rather than the whole race duration. I feel this will be more useful than seeing the overall time, especially since some of us have been attempting time trials to compete on the track leaderboards lately
