Pc build for the 1070

Pretty much the good'ol laptop is starting to die on me, i was wondering if i could get some tips on making a not so expensive and efficient pc build for the new 1070?

My tops are about 1500€ excluding the GPU

cheapest way to build is by yourself and not spending money on shit that doesn matter, e.g. pretty lights and slick case.

are you happy to build it yourself ?

with a budget of around 1700 you can opt for a 1080 and a i7 6700k + DDR4 Ram I would suggest this very much!

If you're happy to build it yourself you can easily save a buttload of money

Try to go on PCpartpicker and find something you think will be good, watch some videos on it on youtube, for an example: Linustechtips has some good videos on building your own computer and I'm sure that plenty of members from the community would have no problem in aiding you build your computer through eg Skype facetime or something of the sorts!

I do plan on building it myself, wouldn't be the first pc ive built :)

I think its 400€ on Eu and 460£ on uk or something like that

So we can already start shaving bits off the price, what do you have so far ? and what would you like to get?

  1. case
  2. mobo
  3. psu
  4. hdd
  5. ssd
  6. keyboard & mouse
  7. monitor
  8. headset
  9. ram
  10. Cooling
let us know what you have already under that, and we can look what can be used alongside it :)

Case doesnt need to be too flashy the basic is enough

On the Motherboard i have been looking at the Asus Z170 Pro

Psu

No idea on what to get

Hdd and ssd dont really make a difference something that gets the job done is enough for me

Keyboard, mouse, monitor and headset already owned

Ram preferably 16gb of DDR4 but i could go down to DDR3

And for the cooling i would go for something water based, mineral oil just seem too messy, and i dont want it sounding like a hair dryer with Noisy, power consuming fans since efficiency is what im also going for here.

A battery pack to go along it also seems like a good idea since i dont want another pc tower burnt from the inside out by a thunder storm

Altough i could just buy an already built pc for 550€ and replace the stock gpu with the 1070

release price in EU is the same funnily enough Computer parts are one of the few things that cost approx the same in US as in EU
My point was you don't know the price, yes we have been given a refrence price inthe US, but that price can flucuate quite a bit, more so outside of the US.

Glad your realistic about the case :) you ok with second hand ?

Would you consider going for the Z170 G1 ? would highly recommend it if your happy to put a custom water loop in (tbh its just push tube onto barb, its not that hard ;) )
PSU all depends on what cards your getting but considering CPU's are dropping power requirements and a single GPU, I would normally recommend 800W max (what are you currently running?)

HDD - SSD - Yes this is the best upgrade you can get, with the Z1 you will eb able to raid X2 m.2 NVME drives for stoopid performance and considering the z1 is only £30 more expensive .... shouldn't be a hard choice ;) you will be getting a NVME drive that is non negotiable ;)

KB Mouse & Mon = Brilliant

Would recommend the DDR4 route as well, simply due to the fact for future upgrades your going to want to keep your ram if possible, DDR3 is facing EOL and will be phased out slowly over the next 20 years lol

Would much prefer if you could build a custom water loop, yes I know it sounds scary, and it does make a dent in the budget upfront, but this is one of those purchases that once you have it, you don't really need to purchase again, My current water loop has been through 3 upgrades. And if noise and temps are what you care about, this is probably your only sensible choice. I would normally recommend 40mm depth rads, with 4 slots total spread over X2 rads (X1 & X3). this also has the bonus that the G1 is water cooled :) so if your getting frustrated by only having 59 frames in arma, you always have the option to OC ;)

This is a loop I put together for somebody else, the entire thing cost US$582. So yes a bit of an investment, but worth it IMO considering this part will live through multiple upgrades

@lionel

I could go with the Z170 G1, there is actually a shop that is selling those where i live, so i can get that whithin the next week, on the case i am going brand new. I will look on the options and try to come with an estimation of what its gonna cost.

Thanks for the tips on the cooling btw. :)

Also do you think i should go with a fan or two, just in case? Or will the heatsink of the components be enough to cope up with cooling failures?

That's true sorry about that, however I just found out now that the price of the Founders edition of the 1080 have been released to 620 so realistacilly the 1080 would be around 500-550 pounds

Computers are expensive :&

@Turtle Mantbh, the above advice on waiting it out a bit, till the cards are released is not a bad call, if they are 100 + what your expecting then you may not have as much to play with as your first thought.

In regards to the case, please keep in mind if your going water cooling you ensure it has slots for the radiators on it. Also just had a look on ebay to see if there were any old silent cosmos cases, but alas no luck.

@lioneli will wait don't wanna make any rash decisions

But so far including the 1070 assuming its gonna cost arround 440€ it comes at about 1490€ so i do still have about 250 ish left for corrections.

Thanks for all the tips!

whoops missed this question earlier, You will still need some case fans even though you will be liquid cooling (they need fans to cool the rads dont't forget, unless you go full passive), dont forget ram relies on air movement to keep cool, but the config, I shave shown above is generally quite good at causing a natural flow through the case, I would still recommend that you pop a fan in the front to push air in, otherwise you have no idea where the air is being pulled into the case (important temp wise). Would recommend getting a case with closed side panels (quieter) and tbh the ones with massive fans on the side can actually screw with planned airflow.

For the love of Satan if you haven't done/installed a water cooling system before JUST DONT DO IT!! you can buy closed-line water cooling systems, they are very easy to fix and you don't have to test it for leaks.

Also I design computers for a bit of side money, recently have just designed 10 computers for an organisation so I would be more than happy to help you design one for FREE!

Umm are you a data analyst by any chance ?? Anyway, actually just turned my life around this message did, ITS TOO HARD , THERE IS A TINY AMOUNT OF RISK INVOLVED. ok better give up. you know custom loops are piss easy to build nowadays, it's literally is push and click.

AIO systems are normally not much better than a decent air cooled system, please could you also explain how you are going to cool the watercooled motherboard.

I am nominating the above for worst advice of the month !!!

@Kech

Water cooling isnt rocket science, if you know the atleast the basics, you are set, its not the 4 headed beast that you are trying to make of it.

Also @lionel was thinking of going passive but unfortunatly the 1070 is air cooled, so im going with the fans :p
