ok for cops to check license plates?

Driving totally legal in Kavala with a cop behind me. Then he stops me because he had read my license plates and saw that I was wanted. He saw my name on the speed radar I think?

Is this OK? I have not experienced this before. I mean as soon as you have done something illegal and meet (Think the radar works when approaching them also?) or get a cop car behind you then you are screwed. So the only thing that gets you caught is if you meet a cop car or not...

And if you look at the plates in game they are blank so how can he read something from them? :)

And one more thing about the radar, are the cops allowed in game to use the radar to measure your speed when you meet on the road?

The checking your number plate RP is a good story to pulling you over. Nice RP from the cops IMO.

If you are wanted for speeding, and a cop car sees you, they are bound to pull you over. It's your choice to stop and pay a ticket, or take them on a little drive around and have your wanted level go up for resisting arrest. Whenever I am wanted, I make sure to get a buddy to drive, so they can't ID me through my license plate (or nametag should they metagame).

In real life i can tag a car bring up the name and all that info. I then can check them on a register witch tells me if they have been arrested before or if there on a police warning or on the rare occasion if there so called "wanted" . So it is implemented in real life. Yes it does take me about 30sec to 1 minute  to get all that info but its close.

Also bare in mind, If you are driving a stolen car it will show that the car belongs to the person who bought it and not who is currently driving. Food for thought.

I believe we are still the only Altis Life server that has ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition), but then again, I would think that, because I wrote it! :) It may well have been 'borrowed' by another server by now; who knows?

Anyway... the ANPR system is MANUALLY triggered (using the / key in-vehicle). It will readout the speed of the vehicle, colour-coded according to the speed limits around the island: green if below 50kmh, yellow if between 50-110kmh and red if over 110kmh. This enables the cops to make a very quick and easy decision on whether the vehicle is going too fast for the location.

As well as the speed, it displays the registered OWNER (in UK legal terms, the 'Keeper') of the vehicle.

I did work very seriously on getting the ANPR to also report whether the Keeper was wanted, and for what crime, but there is a such a lag involved in getting the wanted-list info back from the gameserver, that it seemed not worth it. The speed readout would be delayed so long that the target car would be half a mile away before the Wanted data came back, so I left this out.

Besides, cops have the ability to check the wanted list manually at any time (albeit with the same lag involved) but at least they could do this once they'd already determined the Keeper name, and the speed, and decided whether to pull the vehicle over.

So, yes. It's all entirely right and proper, just like in RL. *YOU* may not be able to see the tiny white-on-white writing that is barely legible on your aged, rubbed-off registration plate on your car, but the ANPR system can. Believe it or not, the car does actually have a unique registration-number created at the time it was purchased, which is stored forever alongside all the other vehicle data in the database. It's this which is 'read' (ie, queried via SQL) when you get your car out of a garage or from a shop, and stored on your game-client in realtime. This is what the ANPR 'reads' to check who the Keeper of the vehicle is. Its eyesight is a bit better than yours. Perhaps on Altis they even use RFIDs? The fact you can't see it is immaterial, then. ;)

And of course, as Gillburg said, the cops don't see the DRIVER name in ANPR, only the Keeper's name (and sometimes multiple keepers if it's a group-shared car). If they know (from an earlier emergency call to police, or a witness-statement) that a car owned by that Keeper has been stolen, then they'll make it a priority to stop it - presuming that the driver is most likely the car thief. Once again, just like real life.

Well yes, but unless the car is stolen the police have no reason to pull you as the nametag doesn't exist (no metagaming allowed). I am always borrowing cars from people.

I check the number plate with the ANPR often when I see a car just to get the name of the vehicles owner and the speed then I check the wanted list and see if the owner is wanted.

Some I stop for routine license and luggage check and if the driver don't say his name or says a false name I will see that on the drivers licenses and all other licenses so in the end saying a false name will only lead to problems for the civilian! And if you are wearing rebel clothing expect me to  pull you over to check you and your mates!

APD is always watching and we will do everything to make Altis a safer and better Island!
