Well well well, the second Facebook purchased it we all knew it was happening.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2016/05/20/oculus_backtracks_on_open_software_promise/

Personally I think Oculus is shooting itself in the foot over this, as the main initial buyers are going to be geeks who actually care about this. As far as mainstream consumers go, I reckon they are going to buy the HTC Vive, as it is a better Headset.

Man I really hope the Oculus dies a horrible death soon, My condolences to anyone who purchased of donated to the kickstarter.

He took the long arm of the corporation to the nad section, and they now him in a vice like grip!  Star citizen netted $$$$$$$$ without bowing to corporations, bet he regrets it now!

The guy got paid, $2 Billion, and he can just quit his job if he wanted too. I'm sure he is laughing his Nuts off so not really caring who has them in a vice.

If somebody tempted me with $2billion to sell out my company..... I'm really sorry guys I have no idea what I would do :/

If someone offered me 2 billion for a company with little more than a low-res prototype, i'd sell up and if it then took off, there's always the option to re-invest.

My brother works a lot with the indie games industry making a name for himself, and he's always asking me excitiedly what i think of the VR headsets around and tbh, i just don't care. I think at the moment its a nice gimmick, but there's too much differentiation in headsets, quality, etc.

There the Occulus, The HTC Vive, Samsung Gear VR (not quite on the same level i know) but for me even as a computer nerd etc, there's just no appeal at the moment. Maybe if I was a developer or coder i'd be interested, but then i'd be annoyed that i'd have 2-3 different VR platforms to develop for, each of them niche. Just my view though, i see VR from a consumer standpoint, rather than early adopter, and for me there just inst a market there, it's a toy rather than a must-have addition for my PC.

I used my Gear VR once or twice and though "huh, well this is kind of cool" then boxed it up and put it away.

I really like the look of the MS Hololens, i think Augmented VR is more interesting than pure VR. It's all well and good being ina  virtual environment, but imagine having that sweet HUD overlay on things. Instant information on everything you look at. I feel it took a big blow when their lead developer was killed in a hit and run though.

Thats the thing that really pisses people off though, there is a standard OpenVR and it was even made by oculus, so for them to ignore it and lock down their headset is even more bullshit :/

I so want a fucking HoloLens, I want to develop for it as well. WANT WANT WANT WANT WANT WANT WANT WANT WANT WANT WANT WANT
Please buy me one ...... Augmented reality has a much better future than Vr as it's scope is massive, cant wait till it can fit in a pair of standard glasses as well. Mebbe when i'm 60 :)

Star citizen though....

even Eve online....

Any flying game with my X55 will be so much fun :D

Not played alien isolation either as im waiting for my rift

Not considered a Vive ?

also interesting is looking at wireshark data when its running.

There is already a "alternative software pack out" and it unfortunately releases all the software for free, but its the only way to circumvent the DRM.
