It might be nice to have "in character" guide written for new players to follow when they first arrive in the city. I choose in character because basically it would provide hints and tips on getting started in the city but would not provide all of the answers they are looking for. (this is not quest helper in wow!). I have very recently been through the new player experience here and it is akin to many others I have seen on other servers but because everyone does things their own way it can be difficult to differentiate which rules are in which city.
With a paragraph or two just giving the basics of what there is and where to go in the city to begin it may cut down on the OOC questions and frame some of the rules and expected behaviours for new players. If it is written in the first person and in character then the player can read it as though its a conversation theyre having with a "contact" who has just met them out of the airport. If it is then stickied on here people can just say "go read the newbie guide on the forums for getting started advice" and you get more traffic through here and also hopefully less ooc spam. Ill include a paragraph below to illustrate what i mean.
"Hey you, yeah you with the bewildered look on your face. Come over here I gots to talk to you for a moment. You dont know me but I looked at you squinting in the LS sunshine and you reminded me of me when i first arrived in the city. So i thought I'd say hi and help you out. Who? Me? You can call me Bob if you like, its not my name but if it helps you to know who you spoke to then sure thing pal. So you're new to the city and you've got a few pounds in your pocket. You could be running away from something, or you could be chasing a dream? Maybe you're looking for the bright lights of Vinewood sunshine or maybe you wanna bury your past in the Alamo desert. It makes no difference to me pal, I just sit here and wait for the tourists like you to come through. I do it because I dont want you to end up the way I nearly did, buried in a ditch in the foothills of Mt Chilliad cos I pissed off the Lost MC. But anyway, enough about me, lets talk about your future... It all starts here pal. You can be anything you want to in this town, an actor, a movie star, a hustler, a wiseguy, or anything in between.
All you need is a phone, some money and some imagination. I can help you with the money and the tourist board already gave you a phone when you arrived (F2) and a map (P) too hopefully but the imagination is up to you. However as its your first day I will go easy on you. Your map was created by the state government and it has some useful locations on it that you will need to visit during your stay in the city. However there is plenty more to see and do if you just go off the beaten track a little bit, if you catch my drift... One of the first things you're going to want to do here is register yourself as a new citizen. That's down at City Hall. There's plenty of legal work there for interested parties. You will need permission from the state however and thats how they reach into your pocket and take the bit they want. Once you have a license to be employed you can go to the office and clock in like a regular 9-5 schmuck. Haha!
If the rat race isn't your thing then there is some 'cash in hand work you can do', fruit picking for the shop keepers who are too lazy to pay reputable suppliers, or a little mining up in the Vinewood Hills might suit you better. There is a gold mine up there that has some fairly relaxed rules about who it employs shall we say. You can go and do a shift and keep whatever you dig up. If you get lucky you might even get a diamond or two so I heard but thats another story... If you wanna smelt the ore you can go down to the Vagos neighbourhoods but be careful down there, the latino gangs don't like outsiders. If you get any hassle at the foundry just tell them Bob sent you and they will look after you... my name still carries weight in some parts of the city.
Beyond that, it's up to you. My advice is make friends early and make em count. Loyalty counts for a lot in this town, too many two bit hustlers stab their friends in the back when they hit the big time or forgot the people they came up with. I don't think you're that sort thankfully. You got a look about you, street smart but loyal. I like that. So I thought I would throw you a bone here... Oh no, I don't want your money, you need it for a cab ride.
Speaking of cabs, twitter - in your phone - is probably the best way to get a ride up to the city, its a long walk. This is LS friend, nobody walks here! If you get desperate and the cabbie doesnt show you can always ride - see those boris bikes over there, we copied those from that nutcase over in England. You can use one of them for free and ride up to the city. At least it will get you as far as Simeon's to get yourself a better ride. Well I've talked your ear off by now I think. There's a whole world of opportunity out there waiting for you to grab it with both hands and wring it dry. When you have finished with that there is a whole underworld out there for you to do just the same with, and thats where the fun REALLY starts.... hopefully I will see you around kid, good day now".
hopefully this helps?
