New Build - Questions

Hey,

I'm planning on purchasing a whole new tower computer to replace the potato i'm currently using. I don't know much about anything (which is why I have been mostly going off a range of opinions and research) and I am currently planning to buy my PC from Novatech.co.uk - but that can change. I can't build a computer from scratch so that's out of the question and I have a total budget of £1400. Here are is what I have setup so far:

Case: Corsair Cardide Series SPEC-03 Mild Tower Case

Motherboard: ASUS Z97-PRO GAMER Intel Z97 (Socket 1150)

Processor: Intel 4th Gen Quad Core I7 4790k 4.0 GHz

Processor Cooling: Cooler Master: RR-212E-16PK-R1 Hyper 212 Evo CPU Cooler with 120mm fan

Memory: 16GB (2x 8GB) DDR3 1600Mhz Dimm

Graphics Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 970 FTW+ ACX 2.0+ 4GB GDDR5

Hard Drive: 120GB Solid State Drive

Hard Drive: Seagate Barracude 2TB 64MB Hard Drive

PSU: Novatech Power Station Black V2 Modular 850 Watt

See specs in more detail here http://www.novatech.co.uk/modifier.html?s=PC-1971&b=3594

Total Price = £1146.21

This means that I have plenty of space to make changes if I need to.

Questions:

-How important is the case? Should I consider spending more on a 'better' case?

-How important is the processor cooling? Should I spend more on an advanced cooler?

-The price difference between an 850 Watt PSU and 1000 Watt is fairly vast, is a 1000 Watt PSU necessary?

-I have the option to purchase two hard drives. Do I need this?

If you can answer any of those questions or give any advice whatsoever i'd really appreciate it :) I'm planning to spend a lot of money on something I don't know lots about so any help is great!

Thanks!

Now I'm definately no PC mastermind, but don't spend £1000+ on a PC if you're not gonna spend money on maintaining it!

Get yourself a fucking good cooler

I have the I7 4790K and the 212 EVO its a good cooler for the price. But if you have the extra cash why not buy a high end air cooler  or if you really want then a all in one water cooler. (But i would rather do a custom loop)

How do you mean maintaining a computer?

In my eyes, maintaining a computer consists of a good anti virus, file and disk management, cleaning out dust etc

For that price you could probably get a 980ti. And a larger SSD, which is not as important but that space will be filled up so quickly.

Dont bother upgrading a 850W psu to 1000W.

As for storage, use a SSD as a boot and hdd to store, install Arma on your SSD as the fps increase is huge.

Professional Here - Looks like a good build! A few points i'd like to make though about it.

1) CPU cooling is a real biggie with these CPUs. They can get very hot, VERY quickly. I can't speak for Coolermaster cpu coolers but that one looks quite slender, i would think about how much heat is it going to disperse. From personal and professional experience i would recommend something like a BeQuiet DarkRock or Noctua - they're a good bit more expensive (60-80 quid) but they're silent and extremely cold.

2) GPU is personal preference for most - but read into the different coolers etc available on different models. No point bilding a nice quiet pc when the GPU is like a bloody jet aircraft. Things like the MSI TwinFrozr and ASUS Strix coolers dont spin when the CPU is below 60C. Very very quiet operation.

3) Seriously consider getting a bigger SSD. 120GB is NOT a lot of space when you consider windows will occupy around 40GB of that. Think 250 minimum.

4) You dont need an 850W PSU. That's mental. Unless you're planning to go all out on SLI. You could half that to 500W and still not be near capacity. You'll save a few quid there. Get one that is at least 80+ Bronze certified for efficiency.

5) For your questions at the bottom:

Cpu cooling = probably one of the most important things to consider. Battle of cooling versus noise usually.

case importance = Mostly personal due to looks, colour scheme etc. Just make sure all your bits will fit inside it nicely. Think GPU length, CPU cooler height etc.

PSU = already addressed. 850w is ridiculous. 1000w is mental. it'll be wasted.

2 drives = this is for RAID0/1. If you dont know - RAID is 'Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks' Raid 0 is called a 'stripe'. You get 2 (or more) equally sized drives and data is written over all of them in a big 'stripe' so 2x2TB = 4TB disk. Danger is if you lose all of the data, but there's some performance gains in read/write intensive operations.

RAID 1 is 'mirrored' you have 2 drives and data is mirrored to them. So if you lose 1 disk, you have a backup of all the data. Writing times are impacted as 2 disks have to be written to at once.

Are you building this PC yourself, or is it built for you? I hope this rather large post helped, if you have any questions feel free to fire me a PM or quote me here and i'll be more than happy to try and help.

Wow, really appreciate the response! I will defiantly act on what you have told me. I am getting the PC custom built from the company I am buying from (at the moment Novatech) however if you can recommend any UK based custom builders I would love to hear them!

No problem buddy. I would say if you can - build it yourself. It's not amazingly difficult if you take your time, however obviously a grand of your cash is a lot and if it's a tenner for assembly - well that's worth peace of mind.

I cant really recommend any as i've built most of mine (and others) computers myself. The important thing is dont rush into it. Take your time and research it all, find what's best for you :)

Here's the last build I did and it was £1050:

  • Intel i7 4790k CPU
  • Asus Maximus Ranger VII ROG Motherboard
  • 2x4GB Corsair Vengence Pro DDR3 Memory (1866MHz)
  • NZXT Phantom 410 White Case
  • MSI Gaming-4G GTX970 GPU
  • Crucial MX 250GB SSD
  • 1.5TB Seagate Barracuda (had it spare)
  • BeQuiet DarkRock Advanced CPU Cooler
  • Corsair CS550M Semi-modular PSU
  • Coolermaster Storm Octane KB+Mouse Set
Currently no monitor as my housemate uses it on the telly downstairs at the moment.

I really don't want to type all of this out, so I'll talk to you on TS when I next see you around hatch. Got a few suggestions you might want to consider regarding performance / price ratio.

To put it as simply as I can... that build is alright, but could use quite a few improvements.

Sounds good, ill probably be around early afternoon tomorrow so ill try and catch you then.

oh, and I have your money ;)

1. Case is mostly about looks, as long as it has decent cable management, good airflow management you are set.

2. Top priority unless you want your CPU to melt and die. Hyper 212 evo is probably of the best air coolers you can buy, water cooling is good but unless you are doing heavy overclocking it really isn't worth the money

3. Even a 650w is enough for that system, but please please dont get crap brand PSU's you will pay for it in the long run.

Go with Corsair HXI/RM Series : CoolerMaster V/VS Series or EVGA Supersonic brand PSU's.

4. Samsung 850 SSD for boot drive, Western digital green drive for storage.

The rest is good to go, i have the same motherboard and it is amazing.

Most definetly reccomend pcspecialist.co.uk

Just checked it out for ya,

i7-5820 (6 core) @ 3.3GHz, samsung 250GB SSD , 2TB HDD (Seagate) and all others same except psu at 650W was 1,282 but you could mess around with that to include soundcard if you wanted and stuff.

Im no expert but I know bits and bobs, most certainly would reccomend. Once you get your order (with the free shipping) you fill a review in and you get an 8GB usb stick thingy! Best part :D

Appreciate the help from everyone so far!

I have had a few different responses regarding the importance of a sound card and I was wondering if anyone here knows anything about them? I have a decent headset (Razor Kraken 7.1) and would like to know if purchasing a high end sound card will noticeably improve the audio in music and games.

Seeing as I have been given a range of responses and opinions i'd like to find out a bit more before I add one to my build!
Thanks

I have a soundboard in my keyboard (G510) and in my motherboard (which I use) and no external. I have never considered buying one really. You probably will notice a difference but probably small. Go without and order one later if needed, they're pretty cheap

To be completely honest, most decent motherboards recently come with a fairly good quality onboard sound board. Buying a PCI one is only really going to be worth it if you're working with raw audio and need the best quality sound you can get.

Hi, i am by no means an expert, but i am definitely sure that the 212 EVO is enough to keep your CPU nice and cool, you really only need a BeQuiet! Or a Noctua when you are Overclocking. You can of course also just get one because you like the extra silence or just for peace of mind.

for someone that doesn't know anything about parts you sure have a sexy pc, ok so I would personally spend more money on a case because the better the case looks means the more money you will make when selling it, I haven't looked at how many fans or what size parts are able to fit into the case as I'm tired but that's essential, I would say get a case with the minimum of 3 fans out 4 fans in (personal preference). That's depending on if your using fans as a cool down solution but yes the case is important.

For the cooling its best to get something high end so it's silent and incase you over clock parts in the future it will help out as things will become hotter. I would suggest water cooling but it's upto you, I have fans and everything is quite and cool in my tower.

for the power supply if you have money to spare then get the 1000w one but honestly 850w is good, I have a 500w, not amazing but it does the job and hasn't effected me.

for the hard drives I would get two ssd's and make them raid 0, this will help your computer find files so you can run things faster but it's not needed, from the two hard drives you have up there I would get the 2tb one if your asking which one you should get because 120gigs is not enough 5 games could take that up. Ps solid state drives are faster than hard drives but more expensive so it depends on how much you will spend.

sorry for the long post, I'm not a computer expert but from what I know this should all be good, I love your build btw

Also unless your editing audio then sounds cards are usually needed

Sure yeah, but the 4790k is a hot CPU - it's a flagship product for it's line and as an unlocked K model - invites overclocking in the future. There's no point paying say £40 for a 212evo, then wanting to overclock, finding the 212 struggles with the temps, and having to replace with a larger cooler down the line. Always build your PC for the days ahead, not the current day :)
