Over the last few years the US DoJ have been trying to convict Kim Dotcom for mass copyright infringement through his site "MegaUpload", which was shut down and seized by the Department of Justice in 2012. I was curious to see what people's opinions are in this case, do you feel that Kim Dotcom didn't break the law or is he fully responsible?

Personally I don't see how Kim Dotcom was being held liable for his users infringement of copyright when it was clearly against MegaUpload's policies and the way the US handled the case was terrible and unlawful.

What's everyone else's opinion?

If you have no clue what this is about: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megaupload_legal_case

Also, throughout the week his extradition hearing can be seen here live: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCw7XhgJhQDHkVrJjiw4CONg (Quite late at night in the US as it's in New Zealand)

He shouldn't be liable for what his customers do, much like mediafire etc it's stupid, he hasn't done anything in terms of breaking the law unless hosting a site which was used maliciously by people.

Well that's a bit strange really. If you own a warehouse and knowingly allow a group of people to set up a Meth lab in that warehouse, even if they are not paying you anything, you are breaking the law.

Prosecutors would argue that the laws for online space should be similar, the defense would say that because it is not, no laws have been broken.

The question shouldn't be "Is Kim Dotcom innocent?" Because at the time, technically yes, he was.

The question should read; "Should Kim Dotcom be innocent?"

And that is for our elected representatives to decide.

Yeah we're fucked.

I'd say innocent.

MegaUpload was so big, it was impossible for them to remove every copyright infringement there was, but they still did a decent job trying imo

One man does not warrant a complete police raid
