Intel Core i5 6600K (Skylake) or Intel Core i5-4690K (Devil's Canyon)

I'm currently looking to upgrade my PC but I'm stuck between the 6600k and 4690k. The issue I'm having is which one will be better for arma or just gaming in general, I'm currently on a budget of around about 300-400 quid (Iknow not much) But if i go for the 6600k because it's skylake I have to splash more cash for the motherboard and DDR4 ram etc. But with the 4690k I can save like 100-150 quid. Really i just need another opinion!

Current Specs

CPU: AMD FX6300 - 6 Core (3.5Ghz)

Motherboard: BioStar (Some cheapo motherboard really)

GPU: GTX 660SC (2Gb)

RAM: HyperX 10th Anniversary 8Gb (2400Mhz - DDR3)

Skylake Build

CPU: Intel Core i5 6600k (3.5Ghz)

Motherboard: ASRock Z170 Extreme Skylake ATX

GPU: GTX 660SC (2Gb)

RAM: HyperX Fury 16Gb (2133Mhz - DDR4)

4690k Build

CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K 3.50GHz (Devil's Canyon)

Motherboard: MSI Z97 PC Mate Intel LGA1150 Z97 ATX Motherboard

GPU: GTX 660SC (2Gb)

RAM: Corsair Vengeance Pro 8GB (2400MHz- DDR3)

(PS: Yes the GPU most likely will bottleneck the rest of the rig)

I would go for the Skylake, but definitely need to upgrade that GPU :)

Yh to what ive been told the Skylake has graphics built in so it should help the GPU, but yh i agree it needs upgrading ive had it for like 2-3 years now i think lol

Both have built in graphics but intel built in graphics are shit and not designed for gaming.

I have the 4790k devils canyon and it's a great CPU. I got it mostly based on
a) Skylake hadnt released

b) I could use my old DDR3 memory with it.

Now, DDR4 memory isnt very expensive, I dont think it's even much more expensive than DDR3 is at the moment considering it is the latest standard. I would say if you can afford it, go for the 6600k. It's a more recent chipset, latest standards, and will stand you in good stead for longer.

However, if you're really pinched for cash, go for the Devils Canyon CPU, you'll be able to reuse some of your DDR3 memory saving you around £30-60 maybe, but beware it's now 2 generations out of date.

I would advise you look for a bundle deal - my CPU, Mobo and 8gb of Corsair Vengence memory was around £400 iirc.

However for gaming prowess, you really need to consider upgrading your graphics card as well.

Bottom line: Get the absolute best you can afford, otherwise your 'upgrade cycle' will be shorter.

If you find one you like the look of, post it here an tag me in and I'm happy to weigh in with an opinion on it. Or put a build together on Pc Part Picker and I can take a look at it for you.

Yh thanks, man, honestly I'm a tight git so if I don't have to spend it I won't, you know every pound is precious lol. But with my current rig I run on standard with about 24-28fps and it gets to a point where you just can't stand the way it looks and its choppy asf and I've dealt with it for a while now maybe a year or two. As Arma3 is my main game I play really, I want to get the best possible stuff which will allow me to play at 30+ at a decent graphics level like high etc without costing me a stupid amount of money.

If you are going Devils canyon, see if you can stretch to the 4790k, it is the flagship of the range, and one of the strongest Intel CPUs. It shouldnt be much more than the i5, and if you're going to get the older generation, you should get as good as you can. When you come to upgrade the GPU, the 9xx range has fallen dramatically. You can get a 980ti for about £400 now, i paid about £600 for mine last year!

Yh its all getting pretty cheap, maybe even cheaper if I had the patience to wait lol. I don't know mate I'm still stuck between the two, if anything I want to go for the 6600k as it is the newer one and what I've seen to the price is round about the same as the 4690k. Performance IDK I would assume the 6600k would perform better as its the newer one but the hell do I know xD

While the 6700k is newer, the 4790k just out performs it in Single-Threaded performance - which is how arma is run. Go for the 4790k
