For those that dont know, it is the spiritual ancestor of Pokemon Go! - Created by the same company (Niantic) about 3 or 4 years back.
It's an Augmented reality game that you install onto your smartphone.
So, Around the world there are portals. There is a cool backstory about what they are, but thats for you to look up.
The portals are all over the place, and were placed there by ealry players of the game. They are usually at landmarks and stuff, and Niantic used that info to place the first Pokestops and Gyms. Anyhow, There are two teams: Enlightened (Green) and Resistance (Blue), and the idea is for your team to control as many portals as possible.
A portal starts out Gray. To capture it, you need to walk up to where it is (Yep, gotta get that ass out of the computer chair!) and deploy a 'Resonator' on it. Once you do that, the portal changes to your team colour and you have captured it. You can then deploy another 7 resonators, which means it is fully deployed.
If you see a portal for the other team, you can attack it using weapons - Once you destroy all their resonators, you can deploy your own and capture it. Simple.
You gain weapons and resonators by 'Hacking' portals. You approach any portal (Yours, Theirs or Gray) and press the Hack button on your phone. The resonators and weapons have got levels, and the higher the level of the resonators on the portal, the higher the portals level, and the better stuff you get from it.
You can also hack a 'Portal key' from a portal. once you have this, you can go to another portal you own and link back to it. This creates a line between the two. Like Ghostbusters, the links cant cross each other. If you manage to link 3 together in a triangle, the area in the middle turns into your team colour and you can created a 'Control field'. The more of these there are, the better.
I've met some really nice local people playing this game, and it gets me out of the house. Went to an international event in Birmingham a little while back too!
