I'm currently running with a AMD cheap build. FX8350 - R9 280 - 32GB DDR 1866MHZ, This rig is a workhorse but now I'm looking into gaming and I've treated myself so far my new build is going to be.

i7 4790k @ 4.6Ghz *

R9 390x 8Gb **

With most my other stuff coming from my older PC, I have a a few questions:

1: Will my 1866Mhz RAM be compatible with the new i7 CPU (I know it sounds daft but the CPU stats max support Freq is 1600Mhz

2:Will I need to reinstall a boot drive due to fact I be using new Mother Board, I don't know if I had to do this last time, I think I did not 100% sure.

3:Will the i7 coupled with the 390x give me that magic 60fps in game, (It's around 970 Ti - 980 mark for benchmarks.

*That's the overclock I'm aiming for around 20-30%

** Managed to get one extremely cheap.

Thanks for the time in reading my questions :)

1) Memory should be fine, but check with the Motherboard for compatibility. It should 95% be absolutely fine.

2) Yes. New CPU, Ne Mobo, New chipset. Reinstall for good measure. If you're on windows 10, just build it all together and do an in-windows Refresh. Piece of cake.

3) ARMA s a CPU intensive game. The I7 will give you good performance, i've teh same CPU with a 980TI and it hits 60fps no bother. Even gets 60fps in Kavala until all the hobos login.

@Samatlewiss FIRST.

Yeah, I am aware that I need new MOBO it was more for the questions I asked as I did pickup a new MOBO at same time as CPU. But thanks for pointing that out would have been a nightmare to get new Intel to find it didn't fit my AM3+ socket :p

The question about the RAM was to due with me reading I needed 1600Mhz ram to be compatible but I know my RAM has automatic boost or decreases Mhz depending what the RAM is being used for ( Boosts an auto overclock to 2100Mhz I believe and lowers to 1333Mhz under no load. )

You should be grand so long as you get a compatible mobo. 1866 isnt an odd speed either. I have 1866 and 1600 mixed on my board, and have the 1600 ones overclocked.

CPU overclock wise: I have the 4790k on stock speed and overclocked and it achieves the same result. What cooler will you be using? The 4790k with a good overclock like that will run hot hot hot.

I just read up on the mobo I'm getting it supports well over 3000odd Mhz speed OC'ed so all my Dimms are matching so time to play with some overclocking.

As regards to CPU overcloaking my current cooler is Artic Cooler tower thing, rated at 275 TDP so I think I should be good and my case cooling design is unique lol nice way to put it, I just forgot to buy Thermal Compound.... wooops...

I currently have my 8250 OC @ 4.6Ghz with max load hitting around 56c so its doing its job some way I got limited by the silicon lottery of all things, I think with noisy H100i Could only knock a few C tops off my temps.

the tower cooler is fine, so long as it supports the new socket on your mobo. It possible has brackets you'll need to change, unless you are going for an all-in-one liquid cooler. If you are, Get the H110i GTX which is a more modern evolution of the h100 and supports Corsair Link etc.

As for thermal compound - I recommend Arctic Silver.

I've slapped win7 installs from amd to intel and never had an issue. Not recommended of course lol, as a fresh install is always pleasant.

I tend to avoid build threads, as most of the time people already know what they want and can afford and its just mental masturbation, I cant stand window shopping.

Or they ask what can you make me for £400, then tell me they built a much better computer than I recommended, but then again they spent over £1400. Meh  meh meh meh meh ..... Sorry ranting a little. V tired after christmas

I was more asking about component compaiblity sorry if you see this thread as a mental masterbation thread.

I know nothing about Intel family I just heard people throwing about that a i7 4790k as one of the better ones without spending wad on new DDR4. and intel i7 gen 6/7 whatever is newest.

And normally I would have gone for a much much cheaper processor like a i5 as some had as much computing power as the 4790k, The only reason I got this i7 is because i got it for brand new and very very cheap, I'm talking under £200 for chip and board.

Nothing against you mate you didn't metaphorically drag me here;), I just constantly get ppl asking me for builds that they have no intention of buying (outside of the community, I am everyone's free help-desk technician IRL), as I like to put time and effort into the builds I research them properly and get frustrated when after 1-2 hours of research is just for somebody to window shop.

Personally I would recommend going down the DDR4 route if your planning to make a jump, as this would be easier to maintain in future, e.g. you want a new board and chip, you don't have to splash out on ram.  But if money is severely limited, then just buy the best chip you can get whilst keeping as many of your existing components.

Oh well I have got my new board and cpu today, Ended up having to buy a new cooler and my temps on my cpu are 90c atm and being thermal throttled :p
