Great Specs, horrible config

So I built a PC on a generous budget, yet the shop recommended some odd configs, your ideas on this?

Intel i7 6700k (OC'ed to 4,2 ghz and 4,5 ghz cache) with a towercooler

Immo3D Nvidea GTX 1080 (2 fans)

16 Gb Ram

a asus Z170-A motherboard (never understood the combination with an nvidea card)

any good tips for a better motherboard for a good price?

I'm also thinking about expanding the case (got a midi tower with only 2 built in fans) (might go for a Coolermaster Stormtrooper)

Some extra ram and a better cooler for my cpu.

I'm not the guy to speak to about PC's I only know what the graphics card and CPU do. However I have that motherboard and it works fine, it supports Sli so in the future if you buy another 1080 you could run them in sli mode.

All looks fine tbh, not sure why your not happy with it, If you are planning on a big build though, wait till 1Q of 2017, as AMD are dropping new GPU & CPU and you will probably see intel & Nvidia dropping their prices as well.

well the problem is that my asus motherboard doesn't support SLI :(

Asus uses AMD, MSI is intel/nvidea orientated
No that's not correct. Nvidia/AMD cards are customised by a wide array of vendors such as ASUS (for Example the ASUS 1080 STRIX for nvidia or the ASUS Radeon RX470 for AMD ) MSI ( MSI Gaming GTX) or EVGA.

If that is indeed the motherboard you have - it 100% supports SLI, you can even see the large SLI logo on the motherboard.

Woops I dont have the Z170-a but the Z170-K. -.-

In that case then yes, your motherboard doesnt support SLI, so you cant run both cards in parallel which is a strange oversight for the store. You would need a different motherboard to support that. An obvious contender would be the Z170-A above however at £130 or so, that might be considered quite expensive, so what's your exact budget?

as for more ram and a better cooler, 16GB of ram is usually fine, the next jump then would be to 32GB. A better upgrade if you dont have it already would be an SSD, specifically an m.2 NVME or PCIE SSD. You'll need to ensure whatever motherboard you go for supports m.2 drives. PCIE drives are an expansion card, so they should work in any PCIE slot.

What cooler do you have at the moment?

A Coolermaster Hyper 103. I think it's advertised for it's silentness.. but my CPU really gets close to 80 C all the time but i don't notice the fan picking up much.

I have an SSD for my OS and a handful of my most played games.

Budget, I haven't established that yet, but 130 is not expensive per se, it depends on the ratio.. might fo for a x99 class motherboard instead. I'm aiming for around 200 for the motherboard, just expand my existing ram, so thats around 100 and a new case would be 150 or so (this one cools for shit).. I have no clue which cpu cooler works best ;0

lets say my overall budget for the next 3 months is 500.

whatever motherboard you go for - just ensure that it supports your CPU socket which is 1151

CPU cooler - depends if you want air, sealed liquid, or a custom waterloop, and for watercooling it depends on the size of rads you an fit inside the case. For aircooling i always recommend BeQuiet or Noctua for air coolers, they're both very quiet and provide excellent cooling power. the Coolermaster hyper 212 is also quite good.

As for the Hyper 103 you have currently, it's not an amazing cooler but you shouldnt be hitting 80c, i would check it's fitted properly, the fan is spinning properly, and it's worth maybe reapplying the thermal paste if you're reseating it.

Since Arma 3 demands quite the processing power I'm also eager to consider to overclock it about 10%, so I also want to krep that in mind.

Any of the coolers I suggested should handle that

Thanks man, you're of great help :) someone offered to help me building a custom waterloop, might do that and slightly oc my gpu too! (Cause with the liquid cooling it should be able to handle that too)

If overclocking your GPU, I would be careful as it's more fiddly and dangerous than overclocking your CPU. If the machine is new and still underwarranty, I would say leave the overclocking and watercooling on them as you will void the warranty removing the cooler and overclocking it, though if you're not fussed on warranty, then go ahead - but just be sure of what you're doing.

The majority of graphics cards are now overclocked from the factory also.
