Hi, i have been thinking and planning for some time now about developing a game, i have finally thought of an idea that i like and many friends have liked, the platform will be steam and if possible i would like to keep the price low as im on a tight budget as a full time student. I dont have much experience with many game engines as the IT course im doing does not include game development, i will not be sharing this idea yet as i have not requested a patent or copyright (i will only do this if the game is in development).

I would like to know what game engine i should use for a FPS that is located on a plane, it would require mediocre-high graphics as it needs to look realistic, i would also like to know what software i should use to model the plane, weapons and characters and if there are any websites or videos that you could direct me to which will teach me how to use the software. This is not just a run and shoot game as the plot requires the plane to have interactions, this game is planned to be multiplayer but this may become complicated so singleplayer will work also.

I only have a part time job so i dont earn much money so it would be best if the software was free and the developers allow me to distribute games without them earning some of the revenue, i have tried using Unreal engine 4 but in my opinion this is not user friendly for those who have not developed games before. So if you can help me out that would be great thank you.

I think Unity would be an ideal engine for this however there's probably better options

I couple of years ago in IT class I tried learning the basics of making video games

My teacher showed me Unity, I found it easy to use if yer decent with yer computer knowledge

Unless you would like to buy an Engine to use I think Unreal would be your best bet as it is free or Unity as you can rent it from month to month and in all honesty from taking 2+ years of Game Engine Design and Game Design I don't want to crush your dream but there is a lot that goes into it more than people know 90% of the time it took me to build my 2D Engine was spent thinking of ways to improve it and then making games was spent majority of the time was spent into spitballing ideas and features and that was the easy part. You need to be extremely efficient with code and be completely dedicated to pursuing this idea if you're ready to do that then continue.

I have spent hours upon hours in Unity, Maya, Mudbox and other 2D applications and I can tell you, it won't be you just going and making your game right off the bat you're going to have to take a while to familiarize yourself with the engine and get the basics because there are many aspects into making a game that many people get frustrated at and give up, we have 150 Students our first year and dropped down to 12.

Yes i have used this engine before to create a slendman type game when i was younger, i think it probably would be best if i used it as it wasent to difficult, thanks for the suggestions, do you know of any software which will allow me to model a plane, weapons and characters and also import these to unity?

Yes i understand, currently i am looking forward to making this game and have wanted to be a developer for some time now i know it will be a pain in the arse but the end result will be worth it, i have experience (but not to much) with coding as i made a website for an assignment using html and css but im sure making a game will be much harder but im willing to give it a try, do you know any software which will allow me to model and animate 3d objects?

The only issue is I use C++ or C# or and other Game Engine/Design oriented languages. I feel your HTML and CSS won't be of much use to you. And Maya is an idustry standard but any good game engine today has that built in unless specifically made for 2D.

Blender

Unity asset store Ia good also
ok thanks i will give blender a shot, also does this allow me to animate models?

oh ok, i will give it a try, im not expecting anything huge from my game but i would like something stable just so me and friends can play.

The good thing is if you do create it, there is Plugins in Unity or Maya that allow you to host your own game server online for free up to like 15 people. A bunch of cool things you can do just practice and go at it.

Do you know how much a 10 slot server would be for an unreal engine game, this is the minimum players in a server i would need, i am also going to give UE4 a try because of the visual effects even tho its frustrating :p
