CPU Overclocking

Mr. Martin

Well-known member
First of all my CPU is:

Intel i5 4440 @ 3.1Ghz

I have a couple of questions, which I wish to be answered in the following order numbered;

1. Can I actually overclock this CPU?

2. Do I increase the fan speed when overclocking, what else do I need to increase, any more tips?

3. Is it actually worth it?

4. Will it boost my Arma 3 FPS since it is FPS intensive?

Thank you for helping me out!!

1. You can try, wont get far tho(not a K series)

2. This happens automaticly, you'll need to increase your cooling and your power supply

3. Not with your setup

4. No, not with your setup because you will only get about 0.1-0.2Ghz on the clock more.

Thank you for your answer. Since you are familiar with this stuff, let me ask you something:

Should I upgrade my CPU to:

i7 4790k ( £265 )

OR

Upgrade my GPU to:

Nvidia GTX 970 ( £294 )

Since I heard Arma III is very CPU heavy I think I should upgrade the CPU, what do you think buddy, or maybe someone else?

Thanks again, Mr. Martin

@@@@ EDIT @@@@

Another question: I have a 550W PSU, should I upgrade it since Im running on this setup and currently two monitors, or is 550W fine if I want to upgrade my CPU or GPU to the ones I mentioned above.

Crap, i thought i mentioned my specs before, there they are:

CPU: i5 4440 @ 3.10GHz

GPU: Nvidia GTX660

RAM: 8GB

Hard drive speed :7200rpm

Another question to throw at you: will it increase my fps if increase my RAM or buy an SSD ?

More ram will not increase you FPS and an SSD would only lower client-side loading times.

Ive noticed small(1-3) FPS boost when installed on my SSD using an AMD CPU, heard that there was much better improvements wich Intel CPU's once installed on a SSD. I would buy the new CPU just because ARMA III likes to benefit from a high-performance single-core im the CPU wich can be found in high-end i5's and all i7's. Just to be safe I would suggest also upgrading the power supply and then just see how it goes before you start overclocking.

Would you recommend me a good SSD and a good power supply that would last me a looong time (prefable a link to ebay), however not the MOST expensive one. BTW I appreciate your help very very very very much my friend!

@@@EDIT@@@ - MY PSU is called: Corsair 550VS. When checking on ebay it costs the same amount of money as some 750W PSU's, why is that? maybe it is a good quality and I shouldn't buy a new one.

Another question is do monitors take W from your PSU? Because I have one very old PSU and I think it takes 180W or something ridicilous like that.

Thanks again!

  1.  Your core speed is locked on that processor unfortunately, you need a processor with the "K" on the end, which mean the clock is unlocked and you're able to overclock the cpu. Attempting to change the BCLK (the thing that says 100MHz) may cause serious damage to your motherboard and / or CPU.
  2. You should monitor your temperatures before thinking about overclocking. Play arma 3 for a while and see what the maximum temperature is. If your average temperaures falls above 60°C while gaming, you'll need to think about an aftermarket cooler before even thinking about overclocking as your current cooler may not be able to keep up with cooling your CPU.
  3. It depends what you do in your everyday life. I do a lot of coding with netbeans and I've found running at 4.1Ghz on an i5-4670K helps a lot when attempting to run multiple java programs.
  4. Personally, I'm currently using the intel i5 integrated graphics to run arma 3 on around 20 - 30 fps on low, and when I overclocked from 3.8GHz to 4.1GHz I found an increase of around 7 fps all round.

I would suggest a good quality PSU for about 650-750W. Yes the PSU that you have is good quality BUT it's still capped at 550W without efficiency in mind.

A good cheap PSU to get is the CM 700B Snatched mine for 50 pounds, works great so far.

Cooler Master 212 Evo heard good thing about that one, or else the Cooler Master Hyper 412S used to have that one myself :D

Is this power supply good enough to last me long enough and will it be good enough for me to upgrade my GPU/CPU/RAM in the future? I don't want to have to buy supply powers every time I get new specs. Thanks.

Edit - Or should I get a more powerful PSU?

Edit 2 - The Monitors don't draw power from the PSU, right? That might be a dumb question but would be nice if it was answered.

Its a good one and will last you long if you dont decide to go all nuts on your specs :D

No, the monitors draw power from the wall

I decided I am going to get myself the new CPU because Arma III runs mostly by CPU and because it will just boost my performance overall. I am also going to get an SSD to install my OS and Arma III and a couple of other important games. Thanks for all the advice, and a final question;

Since I have two monitors and only one graphics card, should I plug both of the monitors into the graphics card, or plug my "main" monitor into my graphics card and plug the "extra" monitor to my integrated graphics. I currently have one plugged in to my GTX660 and the second one to the integrated graphics, it seems to run okay, but I would like your advice on that. And if I get an extra graphics card in the future, should I plug both the current GTX660 and the new one I will get, and run PhysX and two different monitors, or should I just have one and run on the intergrated graphics and my new card, I'm looking to close this thread after these final questions have been answered.

So:

1. 2 monitors on GTX660 or GTX660 and Intergrated

2. Getting second card in the future, then using two for both monitor and physX OR leave one card to do everything.

Thank you again puppy, you are a brilliant computer master :p

Evo 212 all the way for air cooled...

Amazon Link

I'm on a AMD 8350 (8 core... although its not.. lol)

Normal running temp was 50 -60. gaming was ~80C+ towards 90C when not clean (90C is cuttoff for AMD)

Installed the Evo 212... well.. see for yourself!

Wow I'm certainly buying that cooler! I already decided even before you posted that because of all the positive feedback I read on the internet. However my final decision what I'm going to do is wait 2 months (this is when I will have money) and then buy at once my better PSU(not fully decided), CPU(i7 4790k), GPU(GTX 970), CPU Cooler(EVO 212), SSD(not fully decided).

Thank you for everybodies help in this thread! I appreciate it and your support helped me very much! Great server = Great community.
