Certain characters thing

Wasnt really sure where to put this but ill guess ill put it here. The new thing where you cant log in with certain characters is annoying and i don't understand why its a thing, i guess you could say for roleplay reasons but its not that big of a deal to have certain characters. If there is a actual bug or a valid reason for them not being allowed then fair enough but i don't see the point

Example? what shows up? What do you mean? waddup dood, ye talking about custom faces on characters? or default? or.... plsssss teeeell me.

btw if you dont mind, this looks more like a "Question / Answer" type of thread. Moved :p

correct me if I'm wrong @TempR but I believe you mean the "special characters" in role play names like for example the Cyrillic alphabet or letters that are not on UK/US keyboards. If Tempr is talking about the other type of characters I think he means custom faces which I believe there is already a thread about.

hope I helped.

if it's custom faces you're on about I made a suggestion about custom faces a while back and it was denied due to the server lag it could cuase

Custom faces (and squad.xmls) can be a nightmare, unfortunately.

From an RP perspective, we would love to have everyone looking unique and cool, and making great drama and immersion out of acting out their injuries or eyepatches, etc.

However, sometimes, some people cannot play nice, and create textures that are either stupid (in the context of a life-simulator), or obnoxious/adult, etc - though this is rare, tbh.

In practice, the biggest issue comes from the fact that the custom skins have to be redistributed to every single client on the gameserver at that time, under the control of our server, and this can cause issues, ranging from lag, to total freezeups, depending on various factors like size of the textures, and the accessibility of the location they've been stored or hosted in. Our experiences in the past have resulted in us having a 'very occasional' policy on things like custom-faces, mostly for things like Halloween or special events, when they can generally be monitored and controlled, the security of everyone else assured, and the servers kept from harm.

Sorry, but it just isn't practical for them to be enabled 24/7, and if Server 2 was allowing them, that was an oversight, and someone internally will no doubt be shot at dawn soon, for leaving it on! LOL

There are many things in life that I would love to have, and this is one of them, for sure... but just like the harem of Miss Universes, the Bugatti Veyron and the F-16 Interceptor that I want on my personal Caribbean island, it is sadly just going to have to wait. :D

I think the OP is referring to the player profile name not being allowed to have 'unusual' characters in it, at logon time.

IIRC, this is because we've had some problems with these extended characters in player-names, both from a functional POV (e.g. returning them in DB searches, stats-page automation, and so on) and from a 'people don't know how the frick to pronounce &$%*£$ber7rand^+_)( when in game' POV.

It's a trade-off between freedom of creative expression and the need to make everything work or be playable easily. Just because some smart-ass has spent four hours digging up all manner of Cyrillic characters that describe plant genomes, doesn't mean I have time to spend the equivalent amount of time ensuring our database automation can cope with it, or learn how to pronounce it.

There is also the anti-troll defence argument. Troll connects with a username of . We respond by enforcing (say) a four-character minimum name. Troll responds by connecting with a username of .... We ban dots. Troll connects with username of ,,,, And so on, until I electrocute myself with a screwdriver. Life is too short. We ban all extended characters beyond letters and numbers. Troll calls himself asdf. But at least we can shout "Asdoof, you fecking moron' in game at him.

There is also the other (more rational) issue is that with some 'uber-7337' names where people have used multiple characters to represent the individual characters of their name - (ludicrous impossible example follows, but it illustrates the point):

_ _____ _ _ _
| | | __ \ | | | (_)
| | ___ ___ | |__) | _| |__ | |_ ___
_ | |/ _ \ / _ \ | ___/ | | | '_ \| | |/ __|
| |__| | (_) | __/ | | | |_| | |_) | | | (__
\____/ \___/ \___| |_| \__,_|_.__/|_|_|\___|

then everyone will refer to and pronounce that name as 'Joe' in-game, ignoring all the funky characterness... And if someone later reports that person to staff (verbally) for whatever reason, and they go searching for him, they're bound to start with 'J' as their first search-letter, which will, of course, fail. So, this kind of artful funkiness though lovely to behold, is a royal PITA from an operational perspective.

Vanilla alphanumeric FTW. ;)
