Buying a New GPU

Current Card:

Sapphire Radeon R9 290X 4GB TRI-X GDDR5 PCI-E Graphics Card

I want a 6GB or a 8GB for around £250 Maximum, I've been looking at the Sapphire AMD RX470 Nitro+ 8 GB GDDR5

But I am not sure.. my current PC is https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/7NGC7P

Can anyone please advise? @lionel @Zeito
I'm afraid from the large bribes of high perofmrnace that nVidia send my way I cant really comment on what AMD cards are hot shit at the moment, however AMD are big fans of one particular thing:

A lot of their high end cards are crippled via software to provide to lower end cards. I.e. I had an AMD HD6950 and with just a new bios flashed to it, it unlocked extra shader cores to make it the higher performing HD6970 as they are both identical, just a different software on them. This is now ALSO true for the RX 480, which i hear is an AMAZING performer.

You can buy the 4GB version, and one software flash later - you can unlock an additional 4GB of memory. There's also an AMD card out at the moment that when flashed unlocks 128 additional cores.

So if you do go for one - buy Smart.

Ditch the sapphire (sorry i hate them historical reasons, they always made crap cards that underwhelmed)

But you can get the RX480 for the same price with 8GB onboard memory.

Buy the 4GB and flash your way to freedom. Spend the saved money on some White Lightning and a box of amber leaf.

*Disclaimer, future drivers or any further bug fixes to the card, could disable this option or invalidate any warranties in place.
 Most people don't need it, just a friendly heads up.

p.s. don't feel cheated this is perfectly normal behavior for the tech industry; they do the same for CPU's Intel & AMD

@Zeitocool link :) cheers

Yes that's true - you should also be wary if the card dies, your warranty is pretty much gone also. So only do it if you dont give a damn.

Also yes - this is just a method of producing additional SKUs at lower manufacturing costs. It's similar to how some dual-core CPUs are actually quad-core, with additonal cores disabled. There was an AMD CPU that you could make quad core with a soft pencil. a PENCIL. to draw some additional graphite tracks.
