Basically, throughout the orbit of the planet around the sun, the angle of the country relative to the sun changes, meaning the photons hitting the UK are spread across a larger surface area due to that angle whereas the southern hemisphere would have more as they are more perpendicular than the UK (generally speaking of course). This results in a lower quantity of energy reaching the surface, whilst also shortening the daylight hours. Thus, less energy means less heat
