''The Designated Survivor'' is a member of the USA cabinet who, when the President holds his yearly State of the Union Speech, is seperated from the rest of the cabinet, who are all attending the speech in the Capitol Building. He gets brought to a undisclosed location, incase a attack happens on the Capitol and the rest of the cabinet is taken out, he is the designated survivor and is to take over the Presidency.
Kiefer Sutherland, Jack Bauer, is a lowly cabinet member, Secretary of Housing and Urban Development who gets told he is being replaced by the President on that morning. When the State of the Union Speech is held, he is watching from a secure location and sees a devastating terrorist attack destroy the Capitol and take out the whole cabinet, including the President of the United States, leaving him as next in line to the Presidency and suddenly being sworn into office.

I read about it last night and saw the trailer, watched it this morning. I think it's gonna be a good series ^^ I loved Kiefer Sutherland as Jack Bauer, main reason this got my attention.
